I have a 97 4Runner V6 and I'm afraid my trans is in dier need of rebuild. After looking into a lot of the rebuild/replace threads it seems like it's really expensive, most being over $3k. A manual would be perfect for me, less parasitic loss and more control. I'm about to do a SAS and possibly dual T-cases.
As for the trans swap itself.....
What manual trans will I need?
Will I need a different T-case?
Any wiring involved other than, nuetral saftey & reverse?
Anyone got a 5spd setup that they wanna get rid of?
Parts I need: trans, cross member, pedals, linkage, clutch, flywheel, drive shafts (getting long travel shafts).
Before anyone asks, I know my way around an auto transmission. I've rebuilt a few Ford C6, C4 and FMX's. The clutches are probably getting down to bare metal. A few months back the radiator failed me on the trail and I got the pink milkshake and it got pretty F'n hot. After the tow home, I emmidiately darianed and flushed the system and installed a B&M 70268 cooler. I flushed it again 2 more times that week, just to be sure all the old junk was out. No problems since. Wife drove it the other day and from what she explained it sounds like the clutches are slipping pretty bad. I'll find out in about 2 months when I get back home and see if it's really dead or not.
Even if it is OK, I still want to look into this swap for reliability and what not, one less weak link. Like getting rid of the CV's. Thanks for the help
