[Need help] Warning lights? Multi-terrain & Four-wheel drive indicator light flashing

To my friends and 4Runnertiers! :hatsoff:

I've been going nuts looking up and down this (and other forums), mechanics manuals, and I may have finished the web at this point. :smashputer:

I come to you with humility and a sense of pride that someone on here may have an answer or various answers I can test out.

The Multi-terrain Select Indicator and Four-wheel drive indicator lights are flashing. The first slower than the second, but both flashing. :frog: :frog:

I have a 2016 4Runner Trail Premium.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  • Put the 4wd mode selector to 4Lo. Drove in Reverse for 100+ ft. Also drove forward for 100+ ft Did the same for 4Hi. Tried this a few times over. No luck.
  • Checked the fuses, both in the car cabin and in the engine bay.
  • Scanned and cleared any and all codes a few times using a BlueDriver Bluetooth OBD2 scan tool.

A few questions:

  1. Could it be a relay? If so, which one?
  2. One of the wires loose on the ABS or other sensors?
  3. Traction control messed up?
  4. Any relation to a parking brake bypass switch I've added to my aftermarket stereo (Pioneer AVIC8200-NEX)? I've had the switch for a while, but fiddled around with the radio and wondering if there's any causation.
  5. Related to the Pedal Commander I use?

Many thanks in advanced!

Rob

Did your Scan tool show any codes?

Follow the code n see what it is.

I get an annoying Cat Code (bank 1 I believe) that pops up every 10-20k, hate when the dash lights pop up. I cleared the code by disconnecting battery for 3-4 hours and it resets. I prob need to replace cat but first will try Cat Cleaner in fuel n see if that helps.

Try to do this and see if your code comes back up.

Others will chime in. Good luck.

just fyi.... this is how my issues started... after a few weeks it went to just a flashing 4x4 light and the MTS light no longer illuminated.

I have tried clearing the codes (they just come back)
i have checked all my speed sensors..
i have done a zero point calibration.

i have removed power to all aftermarket lighting ( to see if there is any result of my wiring jobs)

nothing fixes it.
I have a feeling my master control solenoid is bad.

I am dropping the truck off at the dealer on Tuesday.

Nope, no codes, which threw me off.

forgot to mention that i have zero 4low and at times i cannot get 4high to engage either
Let's definitely keep in touch! I may setup an appt at the dealer the day before my warranty runs out just in case. I have to get the airbags replaced due to the recall anyway.

mine is a 2018 but i have no warranty as i have close to 50k on the truck.

hopefully your issue is just a speed sensor or abs harness.
if its the solenoid like i believe my issue is, its like a 1500$ repair

yes the SDHQ guards will stop damage to your sensors.. if thats what actually happened.

those sensors are kind of out there and vulnerable if you are rolling thru alot of thick debris and such.

Is the check engine light also on? If so (and I realize this sounds silly), remove your fuel cap and re-tighten it. A lose fuel cap will trigger an engine warning light. The ECU disables all kinds of things when the EWL is active. Crawl control, Terrain Select, etc, all get disabled and blink on the dash.

I basically was in your shoes a few weeks ago...it was the neutral position switch on the shifter in my case...$450 plus, but I had the extended warranty...no problem

I think powertrain is 60k or 5 years.

Oh yeah, I should add that to the list of things I tried. Tried it a few times. No luck. Thanks for bringing that up though!

Shoot, it will be in 6 days! Good call, although I have lifted the car. Wonder if they'll cover it.

Do your best to hold the dealer accountable. These dealers thrive on good reviews. They don't want any negative feedback.

Also, My Toyota Experience, 800-331-4331, can be helpful...

If the dealer wont honor the warranty, let them know you'll be in touch with Corporate.

Hope you get it resolved.

Thanks for the tip! Just dropped it off to the dealership in Sunnyvale, CA. I've had them work on stuff before, so let's see how it goes. Good time for that airbag recall too.

Dealer chased down the wiring and signals and found some of the wires for the front differential actuator cut somehow. Wtf?!?!? They're going to solder and reconnect them again and check again.
