I have a 98SR5 3.4 5speed. when in gear there and driving i get a whine from what sounds like the transmission. if im accelerating or take it out of gear it stops. So it only whines when coasting in gear or maintaining a speed in gear. Anyone elde have this? Is it a common noise or anyone have an idea of what it could be?:roadkill:

After some searching, I think I found what might be the same problem I have... My whining noise is only on deceleration and it sounds to me like bearings. Anyway, I found this in a thread...

1997 sr5, 5speed 4wd. 170k miles. Ugly roar on deceleration. Here's the end of the story:
Bad bearings (pinion bearings?) in the rear differential. My local shop swapped them out for new ones, and showed me the old ones, pitted and gnarly. I'm happy to report the rig drives like new. Quiet, smooth. Was worth the $$$ to have it done. Hoping to get another 100k out of it.
