Need help with electrical issues

RESURRECTION TIME! -Hopefully you guys are still around.....

Same thing is happening to my 4Runner right now - blew Alt Fuse, replaced and now it's smoking every Dome fuse I put in it! No dome lights, no power locks, no radio... :(

When you say "Driver's Side box" is that the on in the engine bay or in the cab? Did you pull every relay and every fuse? Or just the relays?

Driver's side box means the one by your left knee, in the dash. And I wasn't here when TheDurk helped out the op, but I think they unplugged the connectors on back.

:wink2:

I'ma just unplug EVERYTHING. lol

I like that approach. Then replace the DOME fuse first, followed by the 1E plug and 1A plug. Set front DOME light to always on. It should light up. Then replace the other plugs, fuses and relays until something pops and the fuse blows and light goes out. Post back the result and we should have a good idea what happened. Write down the sequence of what you plug in so I'll know what is connected and what isn't when it blows--if it does. Sometimes just messing with all this stuff will fix it and no one will ever know why. I hate that, but it happens.

Plug names shown on p. 24 here.

And yeah, I was talking about box by Driver's knee.

Awesome, thanks. I'll keep track of everything and hope the fuse DOESN'T pop! ...if it does at least we'll know what circuit is causing it, although it would be nice to know exactly what witchcraft is going on!

TheDurk - is that fuse panel layout the same as my 1996? Or do you have access to a diagram for one? Just want to make sure we trace everything out the same...

OOPS. What I wrote was true for most years, but 1996 is different. Start with plugs 1J and 1K as shown on page 22 here:

Awesome - thanks again. I'll follow up later this evening with some results.

If I can't figure it out I'll let everyone know how long it takes to burn the truck down with a wire jumper in there.......

Ok - unplugged everything. Started putting stuff back together - got it all hooked up and the fuse popped on 1J.... This is with an empty fuse/relay box in the engine bay, and no fuses in the cab box.

Thoughts?

Ok. So I plugged all the engine bay relays back in, connected everything and was getting ready to call it quits for the night. Started the truck and found one 15A fuse left...... So I said what the heck and plugged it in. No pop.

Just confirm-Plugs 1D,1F, and 1K and the integration relay were all disconnected and it popped the DOME fuse when you connected 1J?

If that is the case, there is absolutely nothing loading the DOME fuse other than just the internal traces on the fuse/relay board. Sometimes you can find a metal particle or broken trace that is causing the problem and fix it. Otherwise, its an expensive new board or go junkyard shopping.

Yep that's correct. As soon as it contacted the blades it popped.

Got frustrated and put everything back together and it all worked fine!!

Gremlin evicted! lol

Pretty simple really, unplug every load on the circuit, install new fuse. If it pops before you plug anything back in, then you'll burned the insulation on a wire and shorting to ground. If it doesn't pop, start plugging load back in and turning them on until it pops....there's your issue.

Not that simple really. This is not my father's 65 Impala.

Not that simple to identify "every load".

Not that simple to isolate circuits.

Don't believe me? Read the entire thread!

Durk, I just responded to one of your posts about a similar issue in another thread. I also tried unplugging everything, inserting the 15amp Dome fuse, and re-plugging it all back in starting with the 1J and then 1k. My dome came on with 1J plugged in but blew again when I got to plugging in 1F. The fault seems to still be linked back to 3C. I didn't have the luck some of the other guys have had with the rest procedure. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Willy

I am having a similar issues:

I tried to hook up ditch light switch to the wiper heater button left of steering wheel in 5th gen, i dont know if I back fed threw the ditch lights or shorted something but now all the switch lights are out, the HVAC controls are out, and also the buttons on side of radio, and overhead [panel.

The dimmer switch works for the cluster and radio, but here is the weird part, I replaced the 7.5 ap fuse on the wiper heater circuit, its called "panel" and was getting power but no lights. If i touch the ground lead I made for the ditch light switch onto something metal all the lights turn back on?

Its a ground issue, but I dont understand why? the wires arent broke so now I am lost, with the fuse replaced the lights only work if I touch metal with the wire i tapped into the grey wire on the wiper heater switch...

I cant figure this out for the life of me
