Alright I'm pretty new to this forum and been looking around this forum and yota tech to see different ideas, but figured if I could consolidate answers into this one thread it would be pretty helpful rather than opening up a shit ton of tabs. I wanted to get started on a few projects on my 3rd gen 01 Runner 4wd 250xxx miles before spring and summer. Any suggestions and info on experiences or problems I might encounter, specialty tools needed, or if its just better to bring it to a shop suggestions are appreciated.
1.) I've been getting some decent vibration at highway speeds around 70-80mphs. I think it may be the u-joint since they are known to cause this, but is there any way of telling without pulling the driveshafts out? If it isn't the u-joint what could it be? I got used to it so it doesn't bother me as bad, but it is definitely starting to annoy my gf who rides shotgun and has the seat vibrating like a roller coaster ride lol
2.) My runner was rust free till I moved to Kansas and had to deal with snow. So now my rear bumper is pretty much eaten up from last winter and I'm trying to get ahead of the problem before it gets serious. Any recommendations for the undercarriage? I see a lot of surface rust on there and was thinking about getting a wire brush pad to my grinder and do work when the weather gets warmer. Any chemicals you guys use? PB blaster, POR 15.....
3.) Since my rear bumper is pretty much done, I decided to build my own. Seen some designs from the online forums. Pros and cons of using certain/different metal to use? Any of you built your own? Lets see them. I actually took up a welding class at my community college for this project. Since it was a free class why not
