Need new tire advice!

I have the stock Dunlops on my 2008 4x4 Sport V6. I am looking to upgrade these tires to an All terrain tire. I am in Northern PA where there is alot of snow through out the winter...not necessarily deep just spread out...over the winter. I will do some off roading in the area, there is no sand here. I do not want a mud tire as most of the time I will be on pavement. I have looked at the REVO's, BFG TA/KO and Goodyear Wranglers ( I could not find the silent armour in the 4 runner size??) ANYWAYS this is an expensive investment and I am loooking for some help in choosing the tire!! I like the aggressive look of the BFG TA/KO. I was surprized that the Revo's were not all that aggressive but they seem to get good reviews.

look into the continental cross contacts... they have good reviews on tirerack and more importantly, on this board. do a search and you'll find info about it. I'm pretty sure I'll get them when I wear out the michelins... of course i still have another 20-25k miles to go(im at 35k miles)
 
not sure this true or not but one of friends works at a tire shop and told that the as right now the BFG's are having problems tread problems and that there not wearing down right thats what ive heard and ask ur local tire shop if they heard anything but yea BFG's do look kool but another tire you might wana look into are the toyo open country A/T's ive heard great things about them
 
Another vote for BFG ATs. I plan to buy those for my truck. I have over 30k miles on a set on my Jeep and I think I'll get at least 50k on them. I bent a rim once off road and the sidewall was undamaged.
 
I put on a set of five Bstone Revos this month and am satisfied so far---really good dry, wet, snow, nothing off road yet---but ask me in about 40,000 more miles how they actually turned out. I originally went in for some Firestone Destination A/T's based upon recommendations from two guys who have them on their pick-up trucks. However, when I went to different dealers, the three of them that carry Firestones as part of their various brands all recommended against the Destination A/T's and said they don't sell too many. In fact, one of them even said that he took down the display because he doesn't want to sell them anymore because too many people compained about them (so much for Tirerack's rankings!). Maybe there's not any sales incentives for those particular tires, who knows, but the message was loud and clear and they tried to steer me into some cheaper alternatives. I could see one or two saying something negative, but three different dealers kind of scared me away. I can't get Nitto's around here, but I looked at everything else.

Long and the short is one dealer sold me the Revo's for exactly $2.50 (yes, that's 50 cents a tire) more than the Destination A/T's tax, disposal, balance, out the door. Actual cost due to promotions/sales and my charm and negotiation skills was $47 dollars less per tire than last fall when I started looking. I'd start getting prices soon because Bstone is raising prices in March and I'm sure the others will be too with the price of their raw materials and transportation going up so much.
 
First of all, a set of wagon wheels from 1700's handle better than the stock Duncraps. They are junk! :D

BFG's are good off-roaders, but do not handle as well or ride as comfortable as the Bridgestone REVO's. Also, the BFG's do not wear as well as the REVO's. If you're just going to be in the shallow snow, REVO's do really well. They bite and bite. So do the BFG's. I believe in this department (light snow) they are both the same. But if you will be on-road, REVO's win, hands-down.

For right now, I'm going to suggest REVO's. Best tire I've had to date. On my next set, I am going to try out the Nitto TerraGrapplers, but I haven't tried them out yet, so no review. They are cheaper than the REVO's, though, so a big plus there.

I read a lot of good things about Cooper Discoverer ATR's. I finally pulled the trigger today after long consideration of Continental Cross Contact LX and Yokahama Geolander HT. I got such a deal I couldnt pass these up. We'll see.
 
I ordered the Revos ... It will take about a week to get them in...they were 150 a tire so I hope they are good!!! I got the 265/70R17's!! I will let everyone know...the dunlops are AWFUL. I had one Nitto dealer within 15 miles and when I called him he said he did not know when they would be in...he said one week or maybe a month! and he would not order a set for me so they were out.
 
I have Revos with 40k on them , they are done .

They do give nice on road handling , good gas milage , excellent wet weather/rain traction , quiet . Off road , mud , deep snow I didn't care for them .

The tire wear was not exactly great , in a comfort zone of off roading and a winter with a lot of snow , I should have replaced them at 30k miles.
 
What do you guys consider deep snow? Please tell me that even in deep snow they are better than the stock dunlops??? What tire is better in the deeper snow???
 
My 2 cents

So far in terms of handling and value the Pirelli Scorpions have been superior. I am impressed with their snow-ice-slush handling and they track on dry pavement like cat's claws. They are expensive I admit that and the flat spot reported in very cold weather is a question in my mind. Their stability in the corners is better than any Michelin I have owned and they look cool.

I am returning to Alaska in the Fall this year and will post about any problems. That said they get my vote. that along with the 2 cents will buy you a cup of java in the arctic.:biggrin2:
 
I have Good Year Wrangler Silent Armors on my Sport in 275 70/17. No rubbing if that is your concern.

Looked at the BFGs but 1) they were stupidly expensive for the truck, even at the warehouse clubs, and 2) they are a French-owned company and I won't give them my money if I can avoid it.

No problems with the GYs either, phenominal snow and ice traction, of which we have had a pretty good combo of both here in New England this winter and I have been hard pressed to break loose the tires either accidentally or intentionally.

By the way, for the 5 tires (I also completely agree with the 5 tire rotation) I paid just over $1,000 for all 5 with tire protection plan at a tire chain here in NE. Would have been a few hundred more for a set of BFGs.

The 275 760/17s are a snug fit in the spare slot, but not an issue there at all.

Do you have a pic with the 275's on the truck ?
Did you go P or C rated ?

I probably asked this already but I forget.

What size do you go with on stock 17' rims? Pirelli is still my chioce but only 2050 miles on a new ride. May swap them anyway. thanks
