i have decided im going to save up and so the SAS. i'm going into it blind as for what i need, i have no clue. i found several kits such as this one Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts
i was wondering if this is all im going to need? am i going to get a straight axle from the junk yard? need a new transfer case??? this forum is for helping people so lets not be ****s about it..pretty much i am asking for a "what you need for a SAS on a 87 4runner list" i am not wanting to make it look good for a mall cruiser..im wanting to get into more serious off-roading.

all depends on how much you want to spend. you can piece a SAS together for pretty cheap, or you can buy a kit that is a little more expensive, but you know you are getting everything new and everything you need.

here is a basic list:
front axle from 85 or before toyota truck or 4runner. complete
front leaf springs
high steer crossover steering
Front Drop Hanger
Shackles
Frame Tubes and Jigs (for where the leaf springs connect in the rear)
U bolt Flip Kit
Shock Hoops
Shocks
Front extended Brake Lines
Wheel Spacers

I like trail gears kit:

Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts
it comes with everything you need minus the axle, and even comes with everything to rebuild the axle. I would get this if you can afford it

if you want to piece your own kit together, you still need this:

Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts
Toyota, Suzuki Samurai, and Jeep Off Road Parts
and all of the other parts listed above sourced on your own. for example, the shock hoops from an F-150 work great, but you have to go to the junk yard and cut them off yourself instead of buying new ones.

let me know if you have any specific questions. I did SAS on my old runner.

thanks you so much for the info, i looked at the TG kit. but what about the transfer case? will i need a different one of those?

you wont need to do anything with the t-case.

you will need a new front D-line tho.
the IFS double cardan joint doesnt have enough angle, and it will bind with even moderate flex.

steering, shackles, and a spring hanger. shouldnt be much more than that. its pretty simple.

oh ya, forgot about the drive shaft. you can pick that up from the donor vehicle that you are getting the axle from. the T-case will work just fine (same T-case in both solid axle and IFS)

awesome! and what about spring size? i do want it to sit tall. im not sure what lift i got on it now (got it as is) if i get the 5" springs, will it be kind of like 5 inch lift? and i will have to buy the same springs for the back, right?

and like i said im not trying to be a mall cruiser,im going to be using it for what it's built for. im just looking for answers

are you building this into a crawler im guessing? I know tall seems good, but the lower it is, the more stable you will be. Once I initially did mine, I only lowered it from then on. if you can get away with lower, and do some trimming on the fenders I would do that. otherwise you will raise your center of gravity, thus making it far more un-stable. but you will need to match the rear. a lot of people actually use the rear springs up front (RUF)

when doing an SAS, you'll get 1 more inch up front, than what the springs are.

so, if you have 5" in the rear, you need 4" springs for the front to match.

the IFS, and straight axle frames are shaped just a bit different, thus the extra inch.

and, 5' lift, some trimming, and well placed bumpstops should let you run 38's

I'll let someone else chime in here. I had some pieced together springs. a little of the rears up front with springs from different vehicles in there. flexed great but I could never replace it if it broke lol. I never really knew how much lift I had because I had ford springs in the rear.

but do you consider the 5" springs the 5" lift , i also have some body lift.

it would be HUGE.

pull the BL, and toss it.

all you need to match the rear is front springs, that are 1 inch smaller than whatever you have now.

ok, im just trying to compare it to what size it is now, i don't want to put all the money into it then find out that i have to put a lift in the rear. would it sit taller then the current stance of it?

what lift does it have now?

suspension i mean, any?

if NONE, you'll have to buy rear springs too. so a complete lift kit.

the guy said it has just a 3" body, but looking under the rear springs there is a block..so it looks like it is lifted in the rear and the front is just cranked down torsion bars.
