need some advice, contemplating a trade

So I have this great '97 3.4 manual 5spd, I love the truck. its my favorite vehicle ever owned. Gas mileage isn't the greatest though... and it is rather loud on the inside. my GF wants something that is better on fuel and hopefully more comfortable.

My brother-in-law has a '98 4 cylinder 3rz automatic and he is willing to trade me trucks. Here is a rundown of what I know so far;

Mine:
ARB front bumper, 32' mud terrain tires, roof rack, 3.4L v6 4x4 5spd manual, SALVAGE title.

Brother-in-laws:
stock bumper/body, stock tires (needs new tires), 2.7L 4 cylinder 2wd automatic, CLEAN title.

any advice is welcome. I'm currently leaning away from this trade but I'm going to test drive his '98 and have my mechanic look at it. if it is very much more comfortable than mine, I will give it more consideration.

when I bought my truck the previous owner had tricked it out for off-roading; I'm more of a mall-crawler but had this pipe dream of using it as a bug-out truck. I'm thinking this 4 cylinder 2wd automatic will be abysmal in the snow/ice/off road?

Yeah, that's downgrading in every sense of the word...if you want better MPGs, do a tuneup and drive it easier.
I doubt the 98 will be much more comfortable. Especially if it really is stock, it might need all new suspension.

Sell your 4runner and buy something she wants. How is going to the same vehicle going to make it comfortable?
 
I dunno, I was just thinking... I don't know what I was thinking. So is this unanimously a bad idea? is there anything positive to be said for this '98? Clean title vs salvage?:help:
 
I was overly harsh earlier but still somewhat honest. There is really no upgrade to what you are suggesting unless there are major problems with your vehicle and none with the one you want to trade for. If you really want something quieter and with better milage you need to take JayRolla's advise and sell it and buy something both you and your GF want. My suggestion would be to keep it and get a cheap sedan so you can have the best of both worlds. I am assuming your resources are tight but you still have options

As for your question... yes. I think you will find everyone in consensus that this is a bad idea. An automatic truck with a 4-cylinder is not going to be any quieter, and may be in fact louder depending on how you travel.

You can always rip the interior out and do some sound deadening if you're dead set on the truck.

Or trade the truck for something nicely built like a Camry.

Or trade the GF.
 
If you are thinking switching to a 4 cylinder and 2WD is going to gain you better gas mileage and a much quieter ride - it won't.
 
You're lucky you're in Oregon and since you have 4x4 and a bumper you could probably sell your 4runner for $18,000.





That was sarcasm, but you could really get a good bit of money for them. Anything 4x4 when I lived there 2 years ago was appreciating.
 
If you want your truck to be quieter ditch the mud tires and roof rack. If you're a mall crawler guy anyway you don't need either of those things.

This. You said the other truck needs new tires anyways, so that'd be an extra expense regardless. That'll help with MPGs too


And this is probably getting a bit off topic, but why are you letting your GF dictate your financial/ vehicle decisions? If you're not at least engaged, there's no real commitment to the relationship. What if you get rid of vehicle you love and make a pretty major life change, and then break up?
You're more committed to the 4runner than her right now.

I would love to get rid of the mud terrain tires and exchange for something of the same size but more for highway use

the roof rack you say? hmm.. interesting
 
Maybe post a pic of your GF so we can see what she has to make you even consider this.... JK...

Really, I wouldn't do the trade personally. If you don't use the rack, take it off. It'll be quieter and you may even gain a mile per gallon.

Or since I have a sun roof (not sure if you do or not), I noticed when I put the rain deflector thingy in front of the sun roof, and I turned down the air deflector on the roof rack, they redirect the air, quieting the air turbulence down.
