Need some input on build

I've been out of customizing new model SUV's for a while and not use to dealing with factory components, so bare with my questions. One of the guys in my Duck hunting lease has asked me to trick out his loaded black 4th gen Sport edition V8 4x4. I have done some homework on here and other sites but still have a few questions concerning lift and wheel choices. I have a pretty good budget but he is wanting to do a roofrack and maybe bumper.

As for lift, this 4runner doesn't tow much weight. Mainly a 4 wheeler to hunting camp and a Kevlar fly fishing boat, but he tows them a couple hours at a time. He is really wanting a good ride and I know enough about suspensions that I don't want him to cheap out in this department. So Far I really liked the look of the TOYTEC 3in kit with new coils/coilovers/ and shocks, and the ICON kits look really nice but might mess up the budget. The last thing I want is for him to get a lift, it start eating bushings or ball joints and ride like a chevy with fully cranked torsion keys though:ybrick: So with the toytec kit can I expect a good ride and not have to change Control Arms or suspension links?

He is wanting some wheels and tires for it, So I have narrowed it down to methods, xd's and ATX's ,with Nitto trail grapplers or terra's( mainly because I get XD,ATX,and nitto at wholesale) I read that in order to keep them from rubbing I need to run a 0 offset wheel or possibly +18? Could I fit some 285/70's or 285/75 with aftermarket wheels and stock bumpers? or do I need to stick with a 265?

Check out Radflo for suspension, they design supension specifically for the 4runner and its more affordable than ICON. Also, the Nitto Trail Grapplers may not be your best bet for what you've described using it for. They are very heavy and from what I've read aren't the best in rain and snow. If you want a tire with a more aggressive tread pattern that is great year round a lot of people are really into the goodyear wrangler duratrac's, and I have been hearing a lot lately that the BF Goodrich KM2's are awesome year round as well. As far as roofrack and bumper go, is he mainly looking for looks or for off road performance? The shrockworks bumper is one of the most popular on here but can take a while to get one, also check out DeMello Offroad, CBI, and ARB as you can probably get one quicker. Roofrack I guess will depend on if low profile matters to you and how much is going up there. Bajarack makes an awesome rack for the 4th Gens that big and you can put whatever in it. If a low profile rack is more your clients style check out the Gobi Stealth or the Perkins Performance roof rack. I am pretty new to this stuff as well I just did the same build that your clients interested in last week with suspension, wheels/tires, bumper, sliders, roof rack, lighting etc. all in one build so if you have any other questions feel free to PM me.

I think you can get away w/out suspension links for a while but as you will definitely want to change your arms if your going with coilovers.

I have trail grapplers on my tow rig and love them, I tow two rock crawlers on a gooseneck behind my truck and they have lasted about 35k so far. But that truck doesn't really notice heavy tires, and it does great in snow and rain to me. Ive had personally on my street driven vehicles KM2's, old style mtr's, Super swamper SSR's, cooper STT's, and Toyo mt's. The nitto's have been my favorite so far but they are on a 10,000 pound truck. Reason I say nitto's is I don't pay tax on them and get them at killer prices, but i'll look into another tire.

I think he is gonna go with the perkins performance after I sent him a picture, not sure on sliders as he doesn't wheel like I do.

Which Toytec lift are you looking at? They offer two: the cheaper utilizes the Bilstein 5100 adjustments (3 settings) to adjust height and the more expensive (TT Ultimate) basically converts the 5100 to a fully adjustable coil-over. Both would yield a good ride. Most owners of these systems love them. That being said, I'm a big proponent of a 2.5" shock body coil-over since you mentioned a bumper and I'm assuming winch. They'll just handle the weight better. If you're looking to stay within a budget, you could also go the route of OME (Old Man Emu) suspension with their heavier coils. A lot of people do this. You've already got the added weight of the V8 over the V6 up front.

So being that I'm a 2.5" Coil-over guy, I would steer you toward Radflo or Icon. To expound on what OCMEDIC was saying about Radflo... They don't per say specifically build parts for 4Runners. They're a shock company like everyone else. However, there used to be a company called Overland Warehouse that was ran by some guys over at Toyota120, who took the Radflo package and developed a spec specifically for our platform (valving, coil rate). And while Overland is no longer in business, you can still order that spec from Radflo direct.

Also, yes, I would definitely recommend changing to aftermarket upper control arms. Other links should be fine.

All those wheels are fine choices and you'd probably want some negative offset if you want wider tires. I assume your talking ratios for 17" wheels? You can run 275/70 with very little issues. 285/70 will take a little more doing and I'd steer clear of the 285/75's unless you're ready to do a fair amount of clearancing and possibly a body lift.

As far as Nitto Trail Graps go... Do it!! Love those tires and trust me, the V8 won't care about the weight.

Not sure bumpers are in the plan anymore, this will be more of a mall crawler that might see some mud during duck season. Just want him to have a good riding lift that wont break the bank because we are also doing wheels, tires and a roof rack. Any other suggestions or does the cheaper toytec lift work for this application

Some mud? If you just want ground and tire clearance, a spacer lift like the Daystar would be sufficient. Super cheap and won't sacrifice the ride. Otherwise yeah, get the Toytec or a OME and call it a day.

Bump thinking about ordering him the toytec boss system without control arms because he really wont be needing them. I'd rather not just doing the spacer route because thats just half-a$$ in my opinion
