This may go without saying, but I'll say it. I purchased mine from a Honda dealership. It was a trade it. Doesn't have to be a Toyota dealership. The Honda dealership happened to be owned by the same company that owned the Toyota dealership, but it was still on the Honda lot.

Where is the one in Phoenix that you are looking at? I'm local, depending on location, I may be able to swing out a take a look and snap a few pics for you if your seriously considering it.

I've been in your position before. I ended up settling for 2wd after searching for about 6 months. Don't really need 4wd so luckily it wasn't a deal breaker but still not what I preferred. I think it's pretty evident these things hold their value for good reasons and everyone and their mother is looking for a good deal on one. I lost out on 3 or 4 4th gens by people buying them with cash hours after they were posted on Craigslist. It's a tough market for buyers out there.

I live in Boulder, no 4Runners that match my criteria in CO at all ATM. Not a single one that's listed on CL, Autotrader or Cars.com. The only one that suits on CL won't respond, so I'm guessing it's sold.

There's quite a few in the pnw. I don't know your tastes or exact price range or what not but I found 4 on CL that match what criteria you listed. Check Portland Oregon and Seattle CL since you're willing to buy out of state. We dont salt our roads.....no rust.
 
When I was in VA I searched autotrader, cars.com, etc. within a 500 mile radius. There were a lot available like mine at other dealerships that were traded in. I drove to Kentucky to pick it up after having them assure me the interior did not smell like smoke, that was my biggest concern!

Luckily, I bought it in spring 2010 when a "runaway" Prius had everyone down on Toyota a bit.

I too am in CO. Just picked up an 04 Limited in town last weekend. 165k miles, but the place just dropped the price into my range.

Have you considered going through a used car broker? I was going that route which was why we were at the lot that day. Here was my plan after weeks of trying to do it solo. Broker + 3rd party inspection (lemon busters or something like that) = worry/hassle-free purchase.

I know the feeling. I looked for 3 years for a 4th gen, Limited 4wd, V8, Nav, with under 70k miles, anywhere in CA, OR, NV, WA, or AZ. I'd see one open up somewhere, and be gone in a day or two--and then wait months before I'd see another. This was between late 2010 when I started looking, and June 2013 when I bought. So hard to find. I wasn't even picky about color.

Finally found one. In fact, three opened up on the market--all at the same time, and all three with 150 mile radius of my home! I pounced as fast as I could and did not haggle as hard as I normally would have. Ended up with a silver/dark grey with about 63k on the odometer, in great condition except some minor dings I made the dealership fix as part of our negotiations. $26k out the door. Upset my wife since was due to deliver our baby boy the next morning by c-section! But it was so hard to find I new I had to jump on it right away.

I don't know what you're looking for, but hang in! Trust me, it's worth the wait and then some!

Cheers mate. Appreciate it and I'm glad you finally found what you're after! I would have to settle for something not ideal if it take me more than the next 2 months though! Need a vehicle for getting to the snow resorts this winter.
