Need your opinion on some fluid changes

I've got a 97' V6 with 4WD and a 5 spd manual trans. Im currently at 230,000 miles and Im not sure if I should change some of the fluids. I know a lot of people believe that high mileage transmissions shouldnt be messed with. Does this apply to manual transmissions as well? Ive also read on this site that some members never change the transfer case fluid or differential fluid. Can I change those now and be ok? I know for a fact that these three fluids have never been changed yet. I just dont want my car to **** itself if I start trying to fix things that arent broken.

Basically, my plan in the coming week is to change the following:

replace power steering pump and change fluid
timing belt
manual trans fluid
diff fluid
transfer case fluid
brake bleeding
coolant flush

Change your fluid. When people talk about not messing with high mileage transmission, they are referencing automatic transmissions. It is true that if your internal bits have worn down then the grit of the metal shavings may be the only thing keeping it going.

A transmission in this state is dead. It is limping long and will die.

A manual is a totally different beast. It is extremely rare that a manual transmission just stops working. Usually it gives you a long, long time of warning. 1 gear will start by being cranky and you might eventually lose that gear....

If your manual transmission is working properly, change your fluid. You don't have to, but if you feel like it, go for it. They are far simpler and as a result, much stronger and heartier.

Yea. Totally different beasts. In Auto transmissions, the fluid is itself responsible for the physical movement of the car. In a manual it is simply a gear lubricant. Your engine and gears are directly linked vs. the fluid linkage in an auto. You should def. change your manual gearbox oil every now and then and if your transmission is functioning correctly, then changing oil isn't going to hurt it.

Auto and Manual trannys are two separate beasts. They are designed totally different and operate differently. Different mindset all around. Logic to one, doesn't necessarily apply to the other.

You would NEVER run engine oil too long, for fear it might kill your engine to replace it. In the same way, if the lubricant protection of manual gearbox oil has broken down; you do more damage by leaving it in then by changing it.
