Needs briefing on the 2000-2002 limited 4x4 system.

Looking to buy a 00-02 limited 4x4, But I'm confused on its 4x4 system. So is it always in 4x4, yet on good traction it is just kept in some sort of sleeper mode? Such as if I try and have 2wd fun on wet pavement someday, will the blank thing kick automatically into 4x4 as soon as the rears start to break traction? May sound funny, but I like my 2wd power slides and id like to avoid being stuck with some fancy Awd that stops me from having fun.

First, the basic system stays the same from 99-02. But with a different method to lock the center diff (t-case) in the 01-02's.

-Basically, the car starts in 2wd hi. Normal everyday driving.
-Press the button on the shifter to go into 4HI (unlocked) which is essentially All wheel drive.
-Then lock the transfer case and you are in 4Hi (locked) AKA regular 4x4.
-Shift into 4Lo if necessary

Locking the t-case: be stopped with the t-case in 4HI (unlocked)
- 99-00 shift the t-case shifer from 4hi to 4hi(L)
- 01-02 Press the button on the dash by the steering wheel to lock it.


You may need to reverse then drive forward for it to lock successfully.



*but to answer your question. the vehicle is in 2wd and it is the TRAC traction control that is stopping you from sliding. 4x4 doesn't activate by itself.

96's dont have that feature. It started in 99. You just have a pushbutton to activate normal 4x4.

Well arent you lucky. Turbo diesel and multi-mode, and a swing away tire carrier. Toyota really screwed us north american 4runner in the options department.

I think I have figured it out, So Whats this andymod 2.0 business? If I have never wired anything before do you think I could accomplish this mod in a day? I hate traction controls, when i hammer down i want tires spinning.

Also if i do the mod, can i just keep trac off all the time?

Andymod is easy, it disables TRAC and VSC. You just cut a wire under the dash, attach longer wire to each end of the cut wire, then put a switch on the dash. Yes you can run with TRAC and VSC off all the time, but the warning lights for the track and VSC will always be on also.
