All that really does is inhibit his ground clearance and climbing and departure angles. Protection from wild animals would be the best guess.

I bet this handles great on highway on ramps, off ramps, lane changes, speed bumps, driveway transitions, breaking, and acceleration.

Because at the end of the day, there's the Abrams tank, and then there's everything else. This thing looks like it has a draw bridge on the front of it. Maybe it's some sort of landing craft? No idea...
