Negative Offset Wheels w/ 285s

Is anyone running 285s on a -12 or comparable negative offset wheel w/ 2.5-3" of lift. I'm pulling the trigger on some 17x9 -12 offset wheels and I'm curious as to what issues if any I might encounter. I understand that it kicks them out further... I was wondering mostly along the lines of how far they sit outside the fenders and if theres increased chance of rubbing vs. a 0 offset.

quick answer, i'm running 295s with 18x9" and -12mm offset. you will need to trim or move the fender liner forward.

The 17x9 rim with -12 offset translates to the same oem back spacing of 4.5 inches. So measure 1 1/2 inches outward from your stock wheels and that's how far they will stick out. Not much,maybe a 1/4", and you will be fine as lot are running that size rim.

As stated above you will still have to do the usual pulling the inner fender liner forward and minor trimming of the mudflap to fit a 33 inch tire without rubbing.

There was a mixup with the -12/+12 with the guy at Discount Tire. They can only get a me a +12 offset 17x9 wheel due to the -12 being on backorder. I have my mind made up on one wheel in particular.... So I'm bumpin it up to an 18" wheel with 0 offset (due to availability) and 285/65 tires. I feel like thats a good medium.

Do you think I would be clear of rubbing the control arms with 0 offset and 5" backspace?

What width is the 18" wheel? Be sure to still get a negative offset if its 9" wide. Then you wont need to worry about spacers. I love my 9" wide wheels.
 
Dont really know. You might get some rubbing on the uca, but dont know for sure. Guess you will find out when you get them. Maybe aftermarket UCAs will help if you do. I would try to get the correct offset though. Harper7 has a lot of knowledge about wheels so go by his recommendation, i did.
 
I previously ran 20x9, 0 offset (5" bs) with 295s on my truck before changing to my current setup. I have aftermarket UCAs that are much bigger than the OEM ones and the tires did not rub the UCAs. I would think the OEM UCAs would clear no problem with the setup you plan to get.

edit: I have not run spacers with any of my setups

I'll try to contact the shipper about the possibility of -12 offset instead of 0... but if i cant get -12... I'll see how it goes. Either way I'm super stoked to get some aftermarket wheels and tires on my ride.

I have a 2019 4Runner on 285/60/20s. Trying to get negative offsets to fit without rubbing… have a 3in suspension lift already. Tried 2in wheel spacers months back and they rubbed and had to take off.

do some searching. there's endless threads on this topic. if you do negative offset and bigger tires, you usually have to trim the front plastic, move the fender liner, and sometimes chop the body mount on the frame.
 
Trying to not have to do anything cutting. I want negative offset to stick out about and inch and half. Would it help to get smaller tires or smaller rims?

Think of the wheel+tire mounted on the hub as a magic wand.

The more you space it out, the longer the wand gets. While this may move you farther away from inner rub points, it moves you closer to other, completely different rub points now.

Also that tire chart with the green/yellow/red designations shows the viability of these sizes on STOCK rims.

The 285/55R20 was in the yellow (minor modification required with STOCK wheels) not quite in body mount chop territory.

Now you’re talking a 285/60R20. This is squarely in BMC territory. With the specific geometry a 4Runner has, you’ll hear from several people that backspacing helps NOTHING.

Get back on stock rims (17” TRD or SR5 or 20” limited) with positive backspacing and you’ll require the least amount of modification.

If you don’t want to cut ANYTHING, you have to downsize to a 275/55R20.

I had to do all of those mods to fit -38 offset wheels with stock tires. the tires stuck out about 1.5 " past the body. if you want big tires and a lot of offset with no mods, get a jeep or a full size truck.

Yes. If you only rub in full lock, reverse, you should be able to downsize and get rid of rub completely.

If you got them from Discount Tire or somewhere with a “customer satisfaction guarantee” you can probably step down from a 285/60R20 to a 285/55R20 and be good.

I say this because several people (like me) are running Limiteds with 275/55R20 bone stock with no rubbing. You should be able to tuck more than that.

285/55 is a really nice low profile all terrain. Like a 33x12.50R20 they just look “expensive” - I like the look

like i said before, offset wheels that stick out from the body will rub even with stock tire size. if you insist on having your tires stick out from the body, you're going to have to trim.
