Nerf Bar or not to Nerf bar

Hey all,
Im debating wether to put nerf bars on my 99 limited runner?
Anyone have opinions or pics of their rig with them on?
Really wonna get an idea of what im gettin myself into here.

no nerf bars, do a lift first :biggrin2: i think running boards of anykind look kinda dumb on the 4runners without a lift. just my opinion though

I'd say if you don't plan on wheeling it and can get them for a good deal, go for it. Otherwise, I'd get a set of sliders. They're just as useful as nerf bars, can take a beating and are around the same price as a new set of nerfs.

Just saying from personal experience... Save your money dude. I liked them for a little while but then started to really hate them. Especially after seeing all the other options out there, such as sliders and stuff. I wasted over $500 on narf bars and a brush guard.... gosh i could have gotten something better with that!

I had some Westin narf bars and they eventually rusted out, and got bent up cause they hit everything out on the trails. It's like having some hooks on the side of your rig to grab what ever it can. Lastly IMO they are outdated. If you just want steps keep the running boards on.

Well you can get some sliders and weld the straight out like I did so they do double duty. A step and a strong ass slider.

Yeah, this is right on. People pay well over $500 for us to install deezee and westin nerf bars at my shop. You could get a set of 4xinnovation sliders for about the same.

Yep, forget the Nerf bars and do like Ellner did.
Weld on some nice sliders straight out, looks better, better function.

It is what I did also.

I personally like Nerf bars.... especially if they are chrome. (I know... I'm weird... but hear me out!)



First of all..... if you're not gonna wheel your truck... they are more than good enough to act as a step.

Second... on our rigs... they look pretty clean....

Third.... when chrome.... they are more rust resistant than a painted slider. Even from normal use (as a step), they will scratch, and need touchups constantly.

Now... that being said... if you decide to get Sliders... and want them black... I'd get them Rhino-lined. It's more durable than paint... and will look good for much longer

If you put grip tape on the tops of the sliders it is tougher than any paint ever will be.
I do have one chip in the paint on my driver side slider on the front side of of one of the support bars.
I think I am going to touch it up with the paint and then put some grip tape on it, that stuff is almost indestructible.

I had some woman literally push her 200lb giant Cadillac door open with her foot hard enough to put a pretty big half moon into the edge of her door and it didn't even leave a mark on my slider because it hit the grip tape.

I used Monstaliner on the rockers to cover rust correction and protect from new rock chips. It gives the illusion of more ground clearance. But I really like the chrome nerf bars.

sounds like the popular opinion is the sliders with grip tape. my lieutenant at work just gave me a set of black nerfs for free so that's what i'm going with. my truck doesn't really go off road though, so i just wanted a step that wasn't touching the rockers. and these should look much nicer than my rusty OEM running boards. mine will take a bit of custom mounting. once i get them fitted, i will prep and coat them with bedliner material. good luck!

can anyone recommend either good nerfs or sliders?
College student on budget so dont want to break the bank.

I paid $176 shipping included for my Trail Gear sliders.
You then just need someone to weld them on.
I think the average price for that is somewhere around $100-$150.
Then of course you need to paint them.
The materials will cost about $30 or so.

So probably around $300-$350 when the smoke clears.

My chrome nerfs are made by Westin... had them on for 8years now.... and still in great shape. Cost was around $300.00, and they just bolt up to existing mount points on the frame.
