Nerf Bars Installed!

My nerf bars from autoanything.com arrived yesterday so the bf and I installed them this morning. Very happy with the result.

As you can see I went with the powder coated black because I was worried about "too" much chrome on the 4Runner. I think the black balances the chrome out.

Project breakdown:

Cost: approximately $165 (I used the 10% off new customer discount)
Labor: approximately 2 hours (the second side, naturally, went much quicker)
Tools needed: variety of wrenches including 10mm, 13mm, 5/8", 1/2", 3/4", 11/16"

A before shot . . . it rained some this week and the pollen is still bad so the 4Runner is a little dirty. Tomorrow is wash day.

The instructions say to wax after installation but I'm holding off until tomorrow.

Thanks for all the details and the pics. They look awesome. Gotta get these but worried about the install. Do you have to remove anything from the vehicle before installing them or do you just bolt them in?

They look they extend further on the rear and slide under further in the front from that pic above. Is there a way to adjust that? I've installed a number of these on other trucks and usually they are 'even' with the truck when you look down from above. I do like the bars in general but I would want them to be evenly spaced front to back.

My wife's 4Runner has been in desperate need of something like this, but I've been holding off for something in black. Great find.

Good obseveration, westwind. I was wondering the same thing.

Thanks, I didn't want regular running boards because I don't like how dirt and grime can get caught in them since they are closed off (if that makes sense). Always been a big fan of tubulars.

You do have to remove the small plastic deflector that's just in front of you rear tire. It seems to serve a limited purpose and I think the bar now will be just as effective for catching from flying into the wheel well (my presumed intention of the deflector). I actually tried putting mine back on after install but they rubbed against the bar which I figured wouldn't be good for the bar. Other than that, they just bolt on (using factory bolts in some places).

Ha ha, actually the moment I took this picture I knew it looked crooked but it really is just the picture. They are straight in real life, I'll try to snap a better shot, maybe take one while seated on the driver's side.
 
2010 4Runner nerf bars

Great looking bars. I have the exact same Blizzard Pearl 4Runner. I was considering these if and when they come out ! Wow, they already are. I will opt for the stainless ones at $265. Thanks for the info, I'll also post pics when finished.
 
They look great. The only down side is every where I look they say they will not fit the TRAIL... only SR5 and Limited. Thats ok I guess. I am going to make a set of rock rails when I get back to the Mainland and get my AT tires...
 
those look great! however, are you certain that those are 'powdercoated black' as you stated in the original post? they look more like a gunmetal finish to me. anyone else get this impression?

if i go with this style nerf bars, i'd opt for the matte black finish to match all the other matte black on my Runner.

I look forward to seeing the stainless steel, I had a hard time deciding but in the end with the black just so they'd be less conspicuous (in case I didn't like the way they looked).

I can measure it for you. Eyeballing it'd I say you loses maybe 8" or so? I may be way off, guesstimates are not my forte. The bars themselves are probably 3-4" and I'd say they lay 4" or so below the sides.

And thanks, comments like that mean a lot coming from someone with such spectacular taste in 4Runners . . . :thumb3:

Are you sure? These that I bought from autoanything.com list the Trail model as an option. You might give them a call and see what they say.

I'm just going by the description given by autoanything.com which says powercoated black. I am by no means knowledgeable about such things.

As far as wanting a matte black to coordinate with the other matte black trim, I will say that these are not significantly shiny. I think they'll dull some over time, too, especially since I'm in Florida and they are bound to fade a bit.

These are close to what Im looking for, but not the same color. Im looking for nerf bars that are a gun metal chrome gray like (not shiny silver or dark black). Also looking for similar roof rack bars. Here are pics of the bars Im looking for, but I can not find them any where.

While I like the looks of nerf bars, but that's all they are really good for. In terms of protection they don't do much. Any hit off road and they get bent up pretty easily. It looks like yours is meant to be a mall cruiser so they look great and serve their purpose.

And whatever makes you think my T4R's sole purpose is to be a mall cruiser?

I live in Florida, so not much in the way of rocks, cliffs and steep grades/dropoffs in my neck of the woods. Don't insult me, I may be a girl but I know enough about handling terrain and I certainly know the kind of terrain my T4R will see. My necessary "off-roading" down here is mud, sand, and washboard dirt roads (and that's not having fun, that's just getting home). Add in a few irrigation ditches, cattle trails, and flat river beds when cruising through the pasture. More perilous than a mall, certainly, but not so much as to require hardcore gear. Sliders would be a waste of money and look absolutely ridiculous in this flat country.

But uh, thanks for saying they look great? :shrug:

Depends on the bars. I used to own a ZR2 Blazer. I came across one bad mutha who specializes in Jeep restoration and welded products. I had the toughest bars, grill guard, and roof rack made. All built to my exact designs.

I will be starting with bars only on my Trail and might add a grill guard down the road. On the Blazer there was no bending of any kind over rocks. When I got them I placed a jack under the center of the bar and lifted the truck off the ground no problem. The way this guy welds and attaches they are like an extension of the frame. My truck is on order, and I'll post the bars after they are complete.
