New '06 Limited! Tire Choices on 18"

Hi everyone,
Im a new member here, and just purchased an '06 Limited. I would like to run some better/larger tires and were wondering about my choices. Currently I have 265/60/18s on my stock rims. Can I keep my stock rims and go larger? I've been contemplating the Donahoe solution for a little better ride/height.

I have been very happy with my Kumho Ecsta STX tires on my 18's. This is my second set. If you are off-roading a bunch these probably wouldn't be the best tire since they are more of a performace street tire.

Any chance that this would work on stock rims?

I hate to get rid of my 18s!

Nitto Terra Grapplers come in 285/60-18. They're 31.4" overall diameter so close to the oversized 17" tires everyone's upgrading to (265/70-17). They are a bit wider so you may experience some rubbing.

The AT KOs in 285/65-18 are 32.8" OD and you'll probably get lots of rubbing.

According to my owners manual the 18s are 7.5 inches wide. Does that sound right?

Hmm, if it's 7.5", then it's about the same size rim as my OEM on the G500. Anything bigger than 265-series will look too big for the rim. This is based on my experience with Nitto's 285/60/18. The tire seemed to bulge out too much from the rim lip. I did not like it, especially when i have to air down for off-roading. (Note: a few people have aired down without an issue, but i was too paranoid.)

If you're looking for off-roading tires (AT or MT), then trade with someone else for 16" or 17" rims.

If you're not into off-roading, then there a few good tires out there for performance-oriented drivers. Yokohamas make good tires...see AVS tires. Check out Goodyear...i think that they make Fortera with SilentArmor or TripleTred in stock 18" size. Kumho and Cooper makes stock size too, but they are small companies...so i don't have much experience.

I as well am facing the same problem. The Bridgestones (some come with Cross Terrains) that come stock on these 06s are the worst tire I have ever run. If you haven't driven in pouring rain yet...be forwarned. They LOVE to hydroplane...it is quite scary. I am used to running BFG ATs and MTs on past Toyotas and am confident BFG as well as others will produce more options sooner or later. Until then I am either just gonna 1) wait it out with these crappers 2)Buy Michelin Cross Terrains since they are decent for snow and water or the best option 3) jack it up and put real tires on and swap to the 17" Sport OEMs. I think option 3 is what is going to happen sooner or later. Besides any SUV just looks better lifted...In my opinion ofcourse!

Actually, my 06 came with the Michelins - so I guess I lucked out. I think those 33s are going to be a little big even with a lift... and 17s or 16s will be better for airing down anyway... or so I suppose. But I hate to lose my groovy rims - they do have a good look to them.

I think what I am actually gonna do is lift it 2.5 to 3" and just run one size larger. So it will be barely even a 32". I feel the Runner needs more clearance between the wheel well and the rubber.

I wish there was some way I could get a true 6-8" out of a pure susp lift. Too bad there is nothing on the market...as in one lift instead of combining different lifts.

You did luck out...the only problem I have with the Cross Terrains is their look. They don't look agressive at all...you know what I mean? The upside is that they are a very good tire. They do well in dry, wet and snowy conditions. Plus they last. One of the best all around performers I think. The Bridgestones look better but are horrible in wet conditions. I am serious. I have never felt a worse tire...when it rains I have to be so careful for fear of sliding off the road. They are downright dangerous...no joke. Right after I bought the Runner I read all these reviews dogging them and I thought...they can't be THAT bad. I was wrong. I immediately went back to the lot and checked the other Runners and sure enough...a bunch had the Michelins.

I know exactly what you mean... not a very cool looking tire. But at least they do their job. I definately want something a little larger and more aggressive, but it looks like my only real option is getting some new wheels. I may just procrastinate on that a bit.

Thanks for the offer... but I'm going to hang on to my 18's for a while - even if I get a set of 17s for offroad tires. But I'll let you know if I change my mind.

I know this is an old thread, but for guys such as myself with the stock 18" rim and using the search function on this site it would be nice to hear some more feedback.

The BFG AT KO's are also now available in 265/65/18 which will fit the stock 7.5" rim width, are a little over one inch larger in diameter(30.5 vs. 31.7), 1/2" inch wider(15.3 vs. 15.8), and should still fit in the stock spare space. This is my leading option right now, hopefully they wouldn't look too small with my soon to be installed OME lift?

Same boat.

It's the wifes truck, and she loves the 18s, but the tires perform woefully on anything but dry pavement. She doesn't even drive it in the snow because of it.

I'd like to hear some feed back on the ATs as well.
