New '06 Scion Radio

I just purchased an '05 Sport with the V8. I plan to tow with it. Anyway, you guys are right, the stock radio stinks. I have a line for a new radio. It comes out of an '06 Scion. I guess now they have a volume control knob in the center of the radio. Is there any reason to think this will not work as a drop in like the '04 and '05 Scion radios? BTW, how long to install one of these?

I think it will fit in there and work ok, but i remember reading something about the steering wheel controls not working. with the 05 and earlier HU they do work.
 
I just installed the 2006 Scion radio this last weekend. It is a big improvement. I also just ordered the bazooka wire harness from Toyota to plug in a Bazooka base tube, and soon I'll order the Sirius radio stuff. The knob is a nice touch and I like the fact that it looks stock.

I like the 2006 model better with the volume knob. The up/down buttons on my 2005 CD changer really bugs me. Too bad they took away the 6-disc model for the iPod interface model.

Yes. The 2006 tC and xA have steering wheel controls standard, so they will work.
 
Anybody know what would happen if I plugged this into my existing JBL setup? I know I'll lose a few speaker feeds, but is that it (will it feed the other speakers/sub)? I always hear that they don't work for our JBL systems, but nobody ever says why or how to make them work. :(
 
If I am not mistaked, JBL units from an 05 are pure digital .... so I am sure you are going to run into problems there. Also --- why would you switch out your JBL for a scion unit? My friend has an 05 scion and his system sounds horrible compared to my JBL.
 
I was under the impression that the Scion units had much more power than the JBLs and that really the ONLY area that the JBLs shine are using certain encoded CDs--otherwise, like my unit, they are lacking in sound. Maybe I'm wrong!
 
You could be right --- as I am no expert. I would find this hard to believe though --- are the stock Scion units really that powerful? I personally love my JBL system. I had an aftermarket system in my old Acura that I spent a lot of money on ... and the JBL sounds much better than my Acura system ever did.
 
The SCION unit will not work on JBL equipped 4Runners as a direct drop in unit. The plugs are different because the JBL head units have an externally mounted amp. The SCION has the amp built into it.

EDIT: That was the case on the 2003-2005 models, I'm not 100% sure about the 2006. I'd take a guess that its the same situation.
 
That makes sense. I didn't realize the JBLs had an external amp, but that too makes sense, as they have more speakers to power.

Galactic 05...did you get rid of the Scion name on your radio? I do not see it on your radio or is it just the angle of the picture? I am gonna order one of these and would like to get rid of the Scion thing. Also, can you still change to colors to make it match the stock orange?
 
No, I didn't get rid of the Scion, The flash and angle don't show it on the picture. I'm sure it's possible, maybe Goof Off? The stock color is just about exact match like ours. I also have an SR5, so no steering controls. Good luck
 
'06 Scion Radio plugs in back different

I am looking to buy an '06 Scion Radio. It looks like the connectors in back are a little different from the '05 radio. Does this make a difference?

Did you stock radio from your SR5 have a plug at the rear for a CD changer (could also be used for interface for satellite radio)?

The Bazooka Wiring Harness is PTS20-52040-WH

I forgot where I bought it over the internet. It was on a link provided by scionlife.com.

Also, in case of any doubt, the 06 radio is a direct plug and play. I'm not sure about how to install the satellite, which is what I definately want to do soon. Here is a link for a decent price on all the Sirius SAT , that is for the Scion Radio. I'm sure it is plug and play too, I just don't feel confortable doing too much taking apart my new 4runner. I will prob have Circuit City do it, when I get more $$.
