New '07 Camry's are made in Japan?

I took my 'Runner in for its 30,000 mile service and got a chance to look at the new 07 Camry.. Very "Lexus-ish" styling and nice interior except there were too many plastic used around the stereo and vents..

When I was looking at the sticker on the window, I noticed the new Camry's are in deed 'MADE IN JAPAN' - although 75% of the parts are from the U.S. and 25% are from Japan. Japan is its LOCATION OF FINAL ASSEMBLY!! I thought most of the Toyotas are made in US now except the 4Runners.. :confused: :awais:

Wait...75% of the parts are US made, 25% are Japan made, and final assembly is in Japan? Doesn't that sound bassackwards?
 
well.. that's what I thought.. will go back and double check again when I go pickup my truck..

a Japan-made Camry would be nice tho.. :)

BTW, I also saw a Salsa Red 4Runner for the first time in person.. LOOKED VERY VERY SHARP.. I am SOOOO impressed with the color..:love:

I was at Longo Toyota Friday and noticed that the white and galactic grey looking 07 Camry's were made in Japan, the rest were made in the USA. I noticed on the Japanese made Camry's the engine and tranny were made in Japan and in the US made one's the engine was made in the US and the tranny came from Japan. My GF is buying one in May!

Yes, when I was there, there were a few 07 Camry's sold already because it had just stopped raining and a few in the front were washed and had shiney tires and had no window stickers.
 
They are built in Georgetown, Ky....About 60 miles from here. My cousins work at the plant and they are building them there now.

I agree. Initially, i was not too enthusiastic about getting Salsa Red Highlander for my fiance. However, after a few days of looking at it, i am loving that color! A very nice red color.

Our company received this news several months ago. TMMK (KY plant) cannot keep up with Camry production so they made an agreement with SIA to built Camrys there as well.

Our compnay is now talking to Subaru re. the use of our coatings on Indiana Subaru models as well. Subaru quality has been rising the past few years and I would expect continual gains as Toyota's influence infiltrates SIA.

FYI. The offical Toyota code for "Salsa Red" is "3R3". Glad you like the color.

And yes, the Camrys are made in both Georgetown and Japan. Probably half of the 07 Camrys we've gotten in so far have been Japan models. Typically, some of the more hard to find models come from Japan (i.e. hybrids, 5 spds, CE's, etc.)

Most Camry's are made at the Georgetown KY plant, the rest come from Japan. Camry's are also going to be built at plant in Indiana with the idea of not having to export any to US.
 

Well, interesting stuff about the Camry being built in both the US and Japan for our market. I guess they could not keep up with the demand by using only the Georgetown plant. Nice to know they'll build them elsewhere in the USA. (It might also be nice if Toyota could hire some of the workers being laid off from Ford and GM. Heck, they might make less money but would probably be better off in the long run.)

The only way to tell a US built car is to look at the VIN tag. If it begins with a 'J', then the car was assembled in Japan. '1' or '4' indicates the USA, '2' is Canada, '3' is Mexico, 'W' is Germany and I think 'S' is Sweden. Don't know where '5' hails from, though.

Now, as for the Salsa Red on the 4Runner, I think it looks awesome. When I got my '05, they only had the red ones if you got the Limited trim level. Too rich for my blood! Anyway, I am happy with my silver one.

I get it back from the body shop either Thursday or Friday. They had to replace the rear bumper cover where it was hit in a rear-end accident three weeks ago. In the meantime, I'll keep enjoying the dark blue '06 Camry they gave me as a rental car.

P.S. I wonder if the Camry I have is a US-built model. I'll check the serial number when I go to work in the morning.

I am pretty sure I was looking at a non-hybrid XLE. I think the hybrid versions won't be in the showrooms until mid-April or May.

If the new Camrys are both made in the US and Japan, it would be interesting to see the side-by-side comparison between the two in their quality.
 
As far as I know, a small percentage of Camrys have always been imported from Japan. My uncle has a 2004 that was built in Japan and my friend has a 2001 that was built in Japan. While the same vehicle, some of the parts are not cross-compatible. I believe the wiper blades are different and so are the outside mirrors. Japan parts are also a little more expensive.

From what I've seen, the Japan built ones have a slight edge in quality. I've seen quite a few 97-01 Camrys with interior trim pieces not fitting too well and they were all made here while the ones made in Japan seem to hold up better.
 
Aight.. as of now.. The Camrys are made in Georgetown... Japan.. and now at the subaru plant in Indiana.. They r gonna be made there to take some of the pressure off the other 2 plants.. They way i take it though.. Georgetown is the main plant for the camrys.. the other 2 are just to help feed the need for these vehicles..

The '5' is US built Toyota's too, NUMMI plant in Fremont, CA. My '05 Taco is from NUMMI.

The 02-06 Camry's from Japan can be distinguished from the exterior. There's a small square cover (about 1"x1") underneath the passenger side headlight on the front face of the bumper (to the left of the license plate, looking from the exterior head on). The small cover hides a threaded nut for a tow hook eyelet stashed under the spare tire cover in the trunk. Also, if it doesn't have foglights, the covers where the fogs normally goes are removable on the Japan made Camrys. The US made Camrys have the fog cover molded into the bumper.

My US built Camry isn't showing any signs of lower quality yet.
