New 18in tires on 2006 Limited 4runner

The 4runner made its name because of its off road abilitys. I am really concerned that the new tires 265/60/18 will be too low of a profile for going off road. A 60 series tire sounds like a tire for a car not a suv. This is the only tire available on the 06 limited. Did Toyota make a big mistake with a 60 series tire, or do I have nothing to worry about. We are loosing an entire inch of side wall.

Yes and no. I am sure that the average buyer will prefer 18" rims over smaller rims. Most owners don't take their SUV off-road. This is the trend right now...bigger rims for everyone!

That 18" size is exactly what comes on my G500. There is nothing out there for this size for the off-roader! That is why i had to go far and wide to find European 16" rims for my car.

Don't forget, unless Toyota tweak the suspension, this increase in rim size may cause a harsher ride. I sure hope that Toyota tweaks the shocks/springs.

The closest all-terrain tire is: Nitto AT 285/60/18. BFG AT KO makes one in 285/65/18, but it is on national back-order. Both of these tires are NOT recommended for 7.5 rims...but will fit. Some tire stores will not install these tires for that reason. The rest of the choices are more highway tires...Yokohamas make good tires in this size.

If it's an issue for you I'm sure many will happily swap their 17's for 18's.....
