New 3rd Gen - $0Cal

Hey everyone, after lurking for a while and overloading on info, it's time to join.

I'm in SoCal, out of the AV and I crashed my Jeep Cherokee a couple weeks ago. Needed(wanted?) to find a replacement and it came down to a rover and a 4runner. Well, with the desert exploring and having family in tow, reliability is paramount - so here we are.

I picked up a stock '99 SR5 (no e-locker )with 141k. Lift and fun stuff will probably be next year, but for now I play in the desert areas of Antelope Valley and Hesperia. Also in Jawbone and up 395. I am also looking to do some exploring this year around Johnsondale - looking for dispersed, creekside camping spots.

For basic maintenance, what's the general consensus for motor oil / gear oil? I presume that the rotella I ran in the Jeep isn't going to make the Toyota happy? Also - looking for some 5 stars to put on her if someone has them going for cheap?

Welcome! Toyota oils is an obvious but depends on funds. A lot of us run mobil 1 for motor oil. I did use mobil 1 for gear oil as well but switched. I use Lucas gear oil with spedified factory recommend. I recently broke my pinion gear and the the gear shop recommend lucas 85w140 but I used factory recommend 80w90 rear and 75w90 TC/front diff. East coast gears supply (popular shop) uses lucas and recommend 85w140 so I figured they know what they're talking about.

secondly, welcome! you made the right choice with the runner. i've been wanting to explore the jawbone area for years now and might make a stop there in august if it's not too hot. somebody recently made a post about their trip there. it's probably still on the front page.

there are usually last-minute weekend runs planned, so keep your eyes on this board for anything being planned. i believe @oc_overland (on IG) is planning something for the weekend of 5/20, you should plan on meeting up.

...but, I'd be looking for the other 5 stars. Unfortunately I now found a unicorn set of wheels that i'm on a mission for - they're the CV 645 wheels that came on the Hilux's overseas...

I ran Jawbone to the Lower Sequoias into Lake Isabella last year in August. We got a late start so it was about 1 when we hit Jawbone. Wasn't too hot, but there's not a whole lot of shade. Head up into the lower Sequoias and there's a ton of places to explore and check out. Watch some of the side roads, we ended up on a tight jeep trail which ended in my losing that trim piece off the passenger rear side.

I believe these are the 3rd Gen factory 5-stars that OP is referring to. If so you can probably find a set for $250 used, maybe less. Painting them yourself is pretty easy because of the shape.

Much better than that aftermarket junk I see on most rigs these days. (Alright some aftermarket is decent).

Couple hours, but we took a bunch of breaks because I was making my son car sick. hahah. It's all really easy fire road, but there are off shoots that are a little more difficult. I plan on going back at the end of this summer and exploring more of the side roads. There's a bunch of mines and shit back there.

A fun trip that I did in the past was from Jawbone ranger station with an end destination of Redhouse BBQ in Tehachapi; did it through the Piute mountains with no preset route. Just wanted to see if I could do it and used paper maps once out there...
