I am wanting to know what are some really important things i should check for wear and tear and or just replace .My 94 runner is a 3.0 v6 2wd with 147,000 miles on it .I dont really know any history on it at all .I gave it a once over and i dont really see anything major wrong but i am new at this and i dont know exactly what i am doing .I can work on just about anything but i need to learn about it first .I was also wondering what i can check to make the rear abs dummy light on the dash go off and what would make the cruise control not work? The cruise light comes on and blinks on the dash but you cant set it .Thanks in advance for any help .

I just picked up a 94 SR5 4Clyn. 4wd, and the very first thing i did to it was change the air-filter... the old one was sick. Then i replaced my transmission fluid, differential fluids "My front differnetial looked like VERY used oil....", transfer case fluids, engine oil, and coolant, "drained the rad". You never know when this stuff was done last, and once it's done it's done, for at least a while. I checked for propper brake and power stearing fluid level's......, but i didn't change those.
After the fluids i got myself a grease gun and greased all the points underneath the runner that are listed in my manual, 9 in total as well, i took each spark plug wire off the plug, and cleaned it with electro contact cleaner both the wire and plug had an amazing amount of grime on them.
Finnaly i checked my tire pressure, which was out to lunch by the way from the previous owner. I set the pressure to 32psi all around.
That's what i did first off, it was easy to do and gives you a little piece of mind knowing that critical areas of your transmission/drive train are looked after.
If anyone else can think of some things you can do , please post them !!!!

Well, the timing chain can wear over time and snap. Toyota doesn't say to change it in there manual, but a good rule of thumb is every 100,000km or so. Mine rattles right now, after i start the truck... and lasts for a bout 20 sec, and i can hear it in 4th gear on the highway rattleing. It's super-important so if your not sure, if it's ever been done, have someone check for you, by pulling off the valve cover and having a look at it. I'm gettin mine done this weekend, i didn't pull the valve cover because i know it's time to be replaced, 222,000 km on the stock chain...
Do a search on timing chain on this fourum and you'll see what i'm talking about. If the chain in your 4runner has been done recently by the last owner.... then that's a bonus for you.

Well i got a timing belt today and i am going to replace it since i dont know how long it has been on there .I am also going to flush the radiator while i am removing it as well .The next thing on my list is a picked up some front brake pads and after that i am going to change the transmisson fluid and the diffs .I looked at the air cleaner and it looks near new .

Call your local dealer with the VIN to see if it has had the head-gasket recall done. It would be wise to search here and over at yotatech.com to get details about this recall so you are educated when you talk to the dealer.

On that subject, there was a campaign on the steering relay rod on 4WD trucks, it may apply to 2WD ones too. Check it out.
While you're replacing the timing belt it is wise to replace other associated items while you're in there, such as water pump, belts, etc. Anything you take off to get to the T-belt.
