New 4Runner needs windshield replaced

Hi guys, my parents just bought a 2016 4Runner and it arrived with a scratch on the windshield. The dealership replaced the windshield for them, but they used XYG glass, and not OEM. What do you guys think, should they have used OEM glass? Again, this was a new 4Runner, and the dealer thinks the glass was damaged while it was on the truck for delivery.

You can insist in it but it's most likely their insurance company pushing after market. Xyg is Xinyi Glass which is a massive Chinese company. I've been to their factory there and it's as modern as the Pilkington ones I've been too.

I wouldn't have accepted it without new oem glass on a brand new 4Runner. So yeah, I would have asked for it but too late now Id assume.

It may not be too late.
IMO, they should have never even tried to put a non-OEM windshield in it.
It was damaged prior to your parents taking delivery and they did what they thought they could get away with.
Should have never happened.

You guys know there are several "OEM" windshield options right? Toyota does not make glass. They buy it from several vendors depending on who got the contract. It could be this manufacturer supplies Toyota.

Understand the glass could be from the same supplier.
I had to have my windshield replaced after my truck was peppered by tempered glass on the highway and told my ins co I wanted OEM from Toyota which they obliged.
The replacement windshield arrived in a Toyota box and wears the TOYOTA identification information in the lower left hand corner.

Just my personal preference, I suppose.

I've looked at three different 4runners and all three (including mine) have the Toyota name and Asahi tempered etched in it.

Personally, I would have made it clear that they are to put asahi glass back in it. There are lots of differences in glass, some good, some cheap. I've had guardian in the odyssey, it was garbage and if you looked at it wrong it would crack! Replaced with Pilkington, and because I know my glass guy (I do their vans and building signs for them), I got to see the difference between the two first-hand. While both were almost the same thickness, the guardian was definitely lighter! The Pilkington was noticeably heavier even though it was only barely thicker, almost unnoticeable.

Only other glass my guy recommends would be PGW (what used to be PPG), but said they too may head south since its been bought by a chinese company, or something like that.

Anyways, I'd go back and have them order a brand new oem glass and have them swap it out correctly this time. Be nice about it but firm about it being oem, or give them the option to swap the vehicle for another identical 4runner with an unscratched OEM glass. I bet they'll get the asahi glass ordered PDQ!

I needed to replace a front windshield on the 2016. I called my insurance company, let them know about the crack in the windshield. Selected a repair shop, called them to make the appointment, told them i wanted OEM glass, especially being that the windshield has a windshield wiper de-icer. The repair shop called the insurance company and they agreed to the OEM install. No issues since repair, although i could not test out the de-icer being that it is summertime. I renew my insurance in July, i see they raised my policy by $5.00

Good Luck.

I had OEM glass used when mine cracked....I didn't want to lose the heated windshield elements. Also I just really wanted to keep it OEM....done through an independent shop, via GEICO. $50 glass deductible. I'm happy with the shop's work and I can't tell the difference.

$5.00 is nothing, I have a clean driving record, have never filed a claim and I see my insurance rates go up every time they renew the policy.

do you shop around everytime you renew? It might be time to...

Also i need to get my windshield replaced soon. Anybody doing this out of pocket? If so how much is it running you? I am guessing the different glass manufacturer options cost different amounts? And about how long does it take? I am trying to get this done during a lunch break if possible (sorry if this is a newbie question).

I had to replace mine out of pocket after only a few months and I think i remember it being about $250. At first they replaced it with a cheap piece of glass that looked distorted when looking across to the passenger side when making a turn. Additionally, the rear view mirror mount was too high such that you could not get your fingers above it to adjust the mirror. I had them replace the glass with PGW and it's been fine so far.

It took the guy less than an hour, but he also had a mobile install. They came to my office and changed it in the parking lot. Several shops will do this, and I would recommend it if you're time constrained.

Good luck!

Just my own personal experience as I'm now on my third yes 3rd windshield in my 2014 Trail.

Mind you I drive a bit more then the average bear, just rolled 60K.

But the first two times it was swapped with Toyota "factory" OME glass by safe lite. I'm a big fan of using OME stuff, and at the time the rig was still "new car smell" new.

All of my issues where what seemed to be "sand hits". I'm saying very light abrasive road junk. As I said I drive allot so I've been hit by allot over the years and each time the OME cracked it was due to IMOP a very light hit... I understand all it takes is a hit the right way (try it with a busted spark plug). From what I'm told the glass used in today's cars is much thinner in an effort to reduce weight, and somehow the focus has been on sound reduction vs. strength.

Mind you I have 13yrs in the glass industry, and these two things seem to contradict each other in my mind. Thicker glass would provide more sound absorption...

This 3rd time I opted to go with brand X, and so far so good. Can't tell anything different, but my fingers are crossed that it's a bit stronger then OME.

I just replaced the windshield on my 2015. I asked for OEM glass and was told that my insurance co--State Farm, refuses to replace OEM and I would have to pay the difference. I had to pay $100 out of pocket for OEM glass for my Challenger a few years ago, so I've heard this song and dance before. I have a zero deductible policy for auto glass.

A couple of places told me that they would look into ordering the OEM, but, doubted that I would want to pay the difference. Another place quoted me $249 without insurance for non-OEM glass, and $1200 without insurance for OEM glass and that per information from State Farm, I would have to pay the difference between the two since they only pay for non-OEM.

Needless to say, I had them put in the non-OEM and paid nothing out of pocket.

The glass company that gave me prices also said that Toyota charges the highest mark-up on windshields that they've seen. When they put it in, it was identical to the original including the pattern of dots (whatever they called that) by the rearview mirror. Just no "Toyota" logos, etc.

To the OP: I would demand that they replace with OEM--it's what they paid for when they bought it.

Read your insurance policy. Very few companies offer OEM endorsements and if they do you can be sure that you will be paying for it with an increase in your premium. The big name insurance companies like State Farm, Geico, Farmers, Progressive, AAA didnt get big by paying out on OEM parts. You get what you pay for and if you want OEM, then you better start forking over more dough.

Had my 2014 TE windshield replaced by safelite. Other than the toyota markings I could not tell the difference....if anything the replacement has less curvature distortion. Tech seemed pretty knowledgeable, said that there really are not that many plants that make windshields. Further, because it is a safety issue you really don't see that much variation between OEM and OEE.

This is not totally true across the board.
2 instance of why it's not.

My wife's town car was hit by a very large rock kicked up from a passing truck right in the middle of the drivers view portion of the windshield.
I have $ 0.00 deductible comprehensive and have been with the same insurance co for 20+ years. BTW, I am always checking different companies to make sure I have good rates.
When reporting the damage and scheduling a windshield replacement, I requested OEM and was granted OEM on a vehicle older than 2 years because I had been a client/customer for a long time, call it a perk if you will.
Insurance did NOT go up on premiums!

Second example.
Replacement of windshield after my T4R was pelted by the tempered glass, Requested OEM windshield because T4R was not 2 years old. That is one of the stipulations that my insurance has....
Again, Insurance did NOT go up on premiums!

YMMV, maybe it's because I have been with the same company for a long time and not hesitant to remind them of such. :hatsoff:

It would also depend on the state in which you reside. If you carry comprehensive in Florida, then no deductibles are to be charged to you. Some states also have laws REQUIRING that OEM parts must be used in vehicles less than 2-3 years.

Unfortunately in California, none of those apply. The cost of living has skyrocketed leading to a majority of insurance carriers dropping OEM endorsements to stay competitive. I've heard from my family members that AAA no longer allows OEM parts and that the difference will need to be paid by the customer.

The Department of Insurance for most states requires that adjusters can use Aftermarket parts as long as they are documented in the estimate and are of "kind, quality, safety, fit, and performance". That is obviously subjective.

I only say this out of experience with my claim a few years ago. You're ultimately at the mercy at the adjuster and the more information that you have the better.

Thank you for all of the responses. I shared this thread with my parents, I'll update when I find out what they decide to do. I already checked to make sure the heating element was in the windshield when I checked to see if they used OEM glass. The glass does have the wiper heater built in. Seeing all of these posts, perhaps I should be happy I still have the original glass on my 2014 TE.
