New 4runner purchase

Hi All
I am retiring a 97 Ford Explorer XLT with a 6 cylinder engine and 97000 miles. Right now I am at the last stages of config the options for an SR5 4x4 and I can

There are tons of threads on here about V6 vs V8...just search for them.

But, I'll tell you my primary reason for getting the V8.

- Effortless acceleration and quietness. Just firmly hold down the pedal and the truck quickly sprint pass 100mph in a few seconds. Great for merging on the freeways or spirited driving now and then.
 
You know I always wanted a V8 before purchasing the 4R. But I never noticed any weakness in my V6. It never was an issue for me after buying.

Although, I don't tow. It perfect in the snow.
 
i would get a v8 if i have something to tow, of course it can deliver the torque needed for the job. based on my necessity, i chose a v6 besides i dont tow. v6 performs very well and imo, a good balance between power, towing and gas consumption (in real world).
 
I had a '96 V6 Explorer. There would be absolutely no comparison between it's power output and the Runner's 6.

My wife and I constantly comment on how anemic the Ford was and how did we ever put up with it for so long.
 
Drive Both and Decide then.

I suggest you drive both first and then decide which you like and need.

You really can't go wrong with either choice.

From what I have read, there seems to be a 1-2 mpg difference between the two engines. On my 2005 V8, I get around 16-17 mpg on the highway and 14-15 in the city. Just to let you know, the V8's were changed in 2005. The new V8's have VVT-I and a bit more horsepower and torque. My advice to you is test drive! You don't want to lay out all that money and be disappointed.
 
V8 , I get 16 city driving. Quiet and powerful motor.

The V6 is great too.

You just got to pick what's best for you.
 
Just one last question !

I also see that Toyota recommends high test for their V8's what are you using. Want to weigh out the expenses.

Going back to Toyota Saturday for the 3rd time to fine tune all the options and the test drives!

They're both V V T-I engines that can use all grades of gas with no problems. I had them both and I prefer the V8, but like others have stated, I'd drive both for an extended test drive if I were you. Try to include highway driving on your test drive if that is possible and some winding roads, you
 
That having a 2wd mode is a plus and it almost sold me on the v6,but now after having the full-time 4x4 is nice as hell when driving in rain and such I can just giver hell. When the snow hit's I lock the center diff. I neved thought I would like the full time 4x4 but now I'm diggin it !

The advice in this thread is sound. You can also search and see the opinions in earlier threads for these same questions. Will save you lots of time.
 
I actually went from an '02 Explorer Sport with the 4.0L V6 to an '04 4Runner with the V6, and I can tell you that there is a BIG difference between the two. The Explorer is so unrefined, and underpowered compared to the 4Runner. Now I have a V8 and love it, but I never thought the V6 was ever underpowered.
 
As mentioned before,

If you don't tow, V6.
If you do tow, V8.
If you desire additional power, V8.

I have the V6 and it's a 4WD. The 4Runner is about 500lbs heavier than my '05 Tacoma, which is 2WD with the same engine. I don't feel the 4Runner being any more sluggish than the Tacoma despite it being heavier and 4WD. It almost feels that my 4Runner is more responsive and quicker than the Tacoma.

Either engine you pick, you'll be happy with the 4Runner.
