Do you need 4x4? Or are you just wanting to start wheelin it? I'd say just trade it. If you don't know how to do the swap then you will probably have to pay allot of $$ to have it done right.

Just keep saving money and looking everywhere for that "amazing" deal. Keep your 99 in good shape so it will sell for a good price.

Why not just wheel the 2WD? There are some nice 2WD builds on here and they get wheeled hard.

Definitely the least expensive route, not to mention the one that removes the questions and headaches, would be to get a ready-built 4x4. Making a 4WD out of a 2WD is best left to those with serious budgets making serious project vehicles, or someone with a very well-equipped fabrication shop. Like the old saying goes, "if you have to ask", then you probably shouldn't be attempting your own conversion. Your current truck ought to bring enough to get yourself a decent 4x4 to work with, especially since you have some side money to put into it up front. A stock or mildly modded older 4Runner can take you many places.

It's already been answered but there's no way you'll want to try to convert a 2WD to a 4WD. There is 0 benefit to doing that.
I don't know what the price difference is between a 2WD and a 4WD but you're better off selling yours and just getting what you want. Can't be that much of a price difference. Even if you had to get one a couple of years older….

Benefit was far higher than none, too.TRDTeen, definitely save up for that 4x4 and leave the 2WD for your mom. $2300 isn't much, but by the time you save up $5,000 or so, you'll have a lot of cool rigs to choose from. Prices are going down.
If you need anyone to go along with you to check out rigs, I have no problem tagging along. SR5's are getting pretty cheap, and I know how much you'd rather have one of those than a Limited.
Example: My base model sold for $5,500 in 2008. They're going for about 3k now.
Hey COB, just curious on this statement. The Limited seems to have some nice features, I'm just not big on leather myself. I go back and forth on the AWD mode... I like the 4wd for when I'm driving... but when the wife takes it somewhere I think I'd prefer AWD! That's about where the differences I noted ends.

TRDTeen actually lives about a city away from me. We were talking and he told me that he disliked his Limited and preferred the SR5, that's all. I should have clarified.

Ok. I admit there's a lot of benefit to 4wd over 2wd but I don't see a cost advantage for TRD teen to pay someone to convert his truck over. If he knows how to do it himself I doubt he'd be asking the question.
Seems easier to just sell his 2wd and put that $ towards a 4wd. I don't follow 3rd Gen prices religiously but they don't cost that much. He should be able to find a good one and save a lot of hassle.
Maybe 4wd swap is cheap and easy tho. I. Honestly havent researched it.
