New 4X Sliders Paint 'N Install Thread

So, hey everyone. I will be posting my experience of painting and prepping my sliders to installing them.

So I get the sliders in the mail. (4X Innovations sliders - DOM w/Kickout)

The man for the job:

Here is my list of what I'm going to be using:

This is my awesome work desk. It is fully collapsable and works best for me for this job.

NOTE: NOW is the time to put on the respirator! Now, begin.

So I began sanding the sliders. I used 320 grit and it did perfect for getting the top coat off of the steel.

I think you guys can tell which slider is sanded and which one isnt.
1 is sanded, 1 isnt.

Once I got the sliders sanded, I then began using my acetone on them.
I stole the sprayer off of a "Black Magic Tire Shine" and it screwed onto the acetone bottle. I used this to evenly coat the sliders with the chemical:

The nice part about acetone is that it gets rid of oil and muck on the sliders and evaporates at the same time. So after ive wiped my sliders down, these things are ready for primer! ...And Im ready for a beer. (And no im not an alcoholic, one of those beers is my girlfriend's.)
Just put one super light coat of primer onto them, just to have SOME primer. Doing too much all at once the first coat will result in paint running.

After About 2 coats.

Now all I need is a nice warm day to throw on the bed liner!
I will keep you guys updated! (Also, I will be adding better pictures, my camera has all of the good ones.)

Haha, I haven't had the time to work with my engineer to weld the legs on.
So my plan was to just prep and paint the sliders to prevent them from rusting up in my garage.
When we grind the sliders to weld the legs, I will prep and prime and bedline again and will post pictures.
It might also be once the legs are on the vehicle. That way I just just paint everything altogether. It will be under my vehicle so I can just tape off sections of my truck from getting painted.

I am going to advise that you return the bedliner and for get it existed lol. yes it look good and it tough but it also is a ***** to touch up and when you slide over a rock it more of tears it off instead of scratching it off...

my suggestion is a nice black paint. easy to fix and looks good.

I was thinking of this as well for when I hop out. I dont want to rub my legs on bed liner. It will be a consideration I might take.

I would like to second this. I recently installed the exact sliders on my truck, and semi gloss or glossy black would be the best imo, the textured surface is nice if you plan to install them flatter to step on, but where mine are I find myself stepping over them when getting in and out. Also I just did a project with that dupi-color bed-liner stuff and it is a little tough to spray evenly. However, it was my first experience in spraying a textured paint out of a can so that didn't help any.

But so far looks good, good paint prep always shows in the final product.

Some are advising against bedliner but I'm not so quick to say don't use it.

The bedliner would be good for making better traction if you ever stand on them to reach the roof or especially if your sliders are laying flat you may use them as a step.

If you scrape the bedliner off just spray more bedliner down or simply paint the spot black with some rattle can and you won't even notice a difference unless you are looking closely.

Also if the bedliner starts to fade just paint over with an oil based paint like rustoleum and it will look like new.

These are sliders...if you're using them for their intent and the bedliner gets mangled then they are just battle wounds. If you're just doing this for looks then I guess the bedliner would never get rubbed off. :becky:

another idea that i will post up that my buddy used on his sliders is to use grip tape on the top of them. like what they use on skateboards. gives you a grippy top to stand on and a smooth bottom to "slide" on.

I like how bed liner looks but for this i just think it is impractical

I think I am going to stick to my guns on this one. I really want to paint these things with bed liner. This spray can bed liner stuff is not too rough in texture either. I have used it on a buddys trailer. I will mainly use them for stepping up onto my vehicle and stepping out. Also, I have a 6.5" lift and I put my snowboards on my roof. I need something to get up there.
Lets face it guys, Im in Virginia Beach. The closest rocks Im hitting are tiny and altogether are called "sand."

My girlfriend wants a step and I want protection from pricks who think they need their doors wide open to get out of their cars in parking lots.
But yes, I agree with everyone. If I were to be hitting rocks, the last thing I want rubbing them is my abrasive sliders. Thats just begging, "Scrape me off!"

Good info. Thanks everyone for responding. And I saw the sliders with the grip tape. I considered that but I figured, what the hell, why not do the whole thing. Hopefully when its warm I will get photos up. I know this spray paint is hard to use and you have to shake the can for 10 seconds every minute.

factoring that in I would agree. I have lots of rock in Utah so hence my opinion. looking good bro. definitely looks good with your prep work. can wait to see these on your rig!!!

Right on man. I've never seen anyone use bedliner on their sliders so I'm looking forward to the finished product.
