I dig the rack as well. I followed your link but they didn't have much to look at on their website. Anymore info or pics? I've also been trying to find a winch bumper for the 5th gen TE to no prevail. :redbrick:

:wtf: Seriously..............good question. I can't imagine spending close to $1000 on a roof rack for it to start rusting from the inside out.

I have one and I can't tell what it is by looking at it, but it is on their web site. It says it is steel tubing with zinc primer with black powder coating. It says that the fairing is aluminum. Here:
Baja Rack
Mine already has a few nicks from putting my ladders and my canoe up there. I just touch those up with a little black touch-up paint whenever I notice them, but I am certainly worried about it down the road. The Thule luggage racks have a hard plastic coating around the bars to prevent the nicks and dings from putting things on it. These Baja Racks do not have that and mine is already wearing away paint on the main top bars, but I don't know if the bars are tubular or not, so not sure if the Ghobi issue would happen or not.

Thule Crossbars (cheaply) mounted on Baja Rack
Bought some SS U bolts at Lowes today and used them to mount Thule crossbars on the Baja Rack. Keeps the cross bars lower than Thule mounts, but looks kind of ghetto! Point is that now I don't have to worry about thinigs scrapping of the paint on my Baja Rack, which SHOULD BE MADE OF ALUMINUM and is not. Or at least it should have the vynyl wrap on it like hte Thule bars. Mine already was starting to rust. Also, now I can use Thule attachments. Easy to remove too.
This is probably temporary, but thought people might want to see how it looks...

sure looks higher than my Thules on the factory rails... what's the height, exactly?
the BajaRack is really rusting already? ouch.

What I meant is that it is lower than mounting the Thule racks using the universal Thule mount ATTACHED TO the Baja Rack, not the height from the Thule on the 4runner stock roof rails. The way I have it pictured here, it is about 7.5 above the truck's roof. With Baja Rack only, it is 6.5", and then add the height of the Thule bar itself, which is about an inch.
The rust is happening in places where the powdercoat got scrapped off. I put all kinds of things on my roof rack, such as an aluminum canoe, which scrapped off the paint where the gunwales were on the rack. You can see a scrapped off place on the front bar in one of those pics above that I just posted. I am bummed that Baja Rack did not make their product out of a more rust proof material, or that they didn't wrap with vinyl like Thule does on their bars. For $700, you would expect better quality materials...although I don't think any of the aftermarket roof rack companies (GOBI, etc.) are using aluminum...so I guess it is relative...
I still love the Baja Rack...despite its shortcomings...

That is a good idea for sure...but I wonder if you would have to sandblast the original powdercoating off first, resand, and re-prep? Or do you just put it right over the PC?
I have been looking for something aluminum as well and am a bit surprised it isn't available. The only thing I came across was Hannibal Roof racks. I searched 5th gen forum and found no info, probably should search the entire forum...

That is sweet that they are aluminum, guess that is why they are more than twice the price of the Baja Rack...I wouldn't pay that for a roof rack...the Baja Rack was quite a stretch actually...and IMHO looks better.
I hear you, and agree that it is much better looking. These are also aluminum, but I don't like the lack of a fairing.

I love the look and functionality of the Baja rack and keep coming back to it. Searching for something aluminum is overkill probably; though that is my MO generally...
snooper, thats actually kind of a cool idea. now if you have roughly same sized boxes or whatever, you can move your extra crossbars over to snug down the boxes on the sides to prevent sliding around.
i'd almost even try that plastic electrical wrap like they use to keep coils of wire together...i cant think of the name of it, but the Army uses it all the time...you coil it, cut off the ends, and then i think take a little heat to it.
However the rhino liner idea has merit as well. I'm sure it wouldnt take em a whole lot of extra time....if it costs 400 bucks to do a truck bed, and thats a whole lot more prep, it wouldnt really take any time at all to sandblast that rack and recoat it.

4 boats on Baja Rack
Last weekend on a float trip we needed to add more boats than just my canoe on top. So, I found two 2x4x8 beams, slid them between the vertical bars on the Baja Rack, and BAM we had 96" crossbars without even having to take the canoe off to get them on there! Baja Rack made this so easy to do!

Your CITY mpg will not take a hit in general, but HIGHWAY mpg probably will. I can get about 17 city, and 20 highway at 55 to 60mph on flat roads. When it gets hilly, and I increase speed to 65 or 75, it takes a big hit...probably down to 18hwy, or even 17. Bear in mind that I installed my Baja Rack the same week that I got slightly larger and heavier tires with AT tread. This is discussed somewhere in the MPG threads...and a few guys with bigger tires and after-market racks discuss their results.
Bajarack expidition/tent-rack
I have the Bajarack expedition/tent-rack for the 5th gen. I had bajarack add the additional mounts and hardware so that I would be able to use it on my 3rd or 5th gen 4r. I currently have it mounted on a set of track-racks in my tundra. This setup allows me to load my dirt bikes and a RRT for a quick trip to the desert using only one truck. There is a link below to a photo of it on my 3rd gen.
