And I agree that miles per tank is a bad metric. I think the only real way to know for sure is to use an scanguage or an mobile app that takes into account your tire size.

GPS doesn't lie. Here was my first gas up outside of Boston. No scan guage needed. Next trip I'll film it for you. Almost 360 miles. like 358.8 or 359.3 I can't remember.

Just because I got that kind of gas milage doesn't make me a liar or a fool about my trip. I drove it. I filled it. I was blown away by it... I am pretty happy about it!

Mileage means nothing without knowing how much gas you used. It's also pointless to say "I get XXX amount of miles per tank of gas". Our gas gauges all read a little differently and we all fill up and different times based on where the needle is. Personally, I normally start thinking about getting gas at a 1/4 of a tank and will find some place to get gas just after the gas light comes on. I normally put in anywhere from 12-14 gallons of gas and drive ~ 240-280 miles. I could probably easily drive into the 300 mile range and be safe, but why take a chance of running out of gas? and/or sucking up crude from your gas tank? To get your mpg top off your tank, keep track of your mileage, then next time you top up, divide the mileage/gallons to get your mpg. Anything else is pointless.

Not bad, but not all that great either. I consistently get between 21-23 on the highway with my V6...with the stock 155K old cat. Summer time, that is. Winter is worse, obviously.

Anyway. Can we please just know how many gallons it took for you to drive 358.8 miles? Without knowing that, you could have gotten any MPG between 19-26.

If I was 99% empty. I fill the tank to 100%. I dove 360 miles until empty (or very close) I think that about is enough calculation as I need...

My 99% empty is 18.5 gallons, many others on here can run dry and only get 15 or 16 gallons into their tanks, so that is why for accurate mpgs we divide miles per tank by how many gallons we pump into the tank.

I've used them for many years on 4 different cars. Search "magnaflow 2.5 catalytic converter" on eBay. This cost assumes that you have flanges/gaskets or can move them over from the old cat with your saw/welder.

God lol... its in the fist few posts, the cost. Also I am a DIY so never a garage or dealers I do most work myself. Also its welded in. Someone stole the cat. Not many choices

I guess 16.5 gallons maybe a tad ,more. When I drive back I'll be sure to document it for you. I was guessing 21-22 mpg

There are multiple factors here. I don't think the divide by gallons in the tank method really works.

I prefer to use a phone app like fuel log for android. The best way would be to calculate the tire size offset so that you get accurate numbers.

Really only an application that uses GPS to count the actual miles driven + scanguage to see how much fuel in GAL was actually used will be accurate.

360 miles --- surprising to say the least.


ALSO, the fuel gauges in these vehicles are notoriously inaccurate. If you started with a full tank at point A and then filled up at point B you can determine the GAL used by looking at the pump. This combined with the GPS or map or how far you drove should be sufficient for figuring out the MPG. What most people do however is wait until it gets towards E and then say "hey its on E and I drove X miles"

But honestly. If I filled up in Boston and drove to my current location. I got 359 miles then had to fill up cause the light was on for the last 20 miles and I am pretty sure it was near empty, why is it so hard to believe

Near empty is anywhere from 13-18 gallons, thats a large difference, most people on here find that they can only get 16 gallons in if they run it dry, whereas i and a few other member can get the full 18, i believe that you got as many miles as you did, its just that that number is almost useless without how many gallons were used!

Thanks for the thread OP. Ive done everything to my 4runner but install a new cat.

(new o2, new fluids, plugs wires, fuel filter, seam foam, k&n ) and im still getting a avg of 16mpg

For 60$ its worth a shot. Would realy make this truck more enjoyable .

Thread bump / revive. I don't really care about impressions or anything - I'm just more curious about MPG bumps that people with high miles and/or old rich supercharger tunes saw after replacing the cat. I'm tempted to try this myself.
