Wife will be getting the 4runner next year and i dont think i want to go back to a full size except maybe a regular cab, but a truck would be helpful around the house. (if kids are out of the question) i was thinking i could get a 4x4 GMC regular cab which comes in at $42k online, but got to thinking i could get a trd pro tacoma for that price.
soif they dont discontinue the regular cab next year my choices would be

GMC regular cab 4x4
Tacoma crewcab 4x4

both around the 40k price new

Well why not a Tundra? Since we are on a Toyota biased site. You mentioned regular cab but then compared it to a crew.

I personally like single cab short beds if I didn't need the seats.

Wait for new Tundra before you decide. IMO the Pro would hold most value and better reliability than the GMC. But I would go with an Offroad as you save lots of money and your really paying for pro badging.

Yeah, hold out for the new Tundra. It'll feel much newer for longer.
