I tried pricing the Falken A/T3W with Tire Buyer. I didn't find the price to be a savings over shopping locally with a tire dealer. I got a better price by a few dollars at American Tire Depot here in Los Angeles. The total was $1063 installed for five (5) LT285/70R17, E rated tires. I'm getting a matching spare and matching 5th rim. For 4 or 5 TPMS sensors it was another $28 ($8 each instead of $3 each for simple stems). Tire buyer wanted about $950 with a $50 discount for 4 or more Falken tires. Free shipping to my favorite tire shop for installation. Installation could be as low as $130 for 5 with the TPMS stems.

The tire shop has a Hunter balancing tool that looked okay. Is anyone familiar with that tire balancing tool?

I want to leave the original TPMS sensors in the OEM tires and sell them with the stock Trail tires. Is that the right way to do it? Will the tire shop be able to reset the car to recognize the TPMS sensors?

My shop is equipped with two balancers....Coats and Hunter. The Hunter Road Force equipment is the top balancer in the industry IF the technician operating it is properly trained. You have to use the right cone adaptors and be willing to dismount the tire after initial mounting to find the "sweet spot" for matching the tire and rim. It can also predict the best location on the vehicle to eliminate tire pull. You can always ask your tire shop (at the risk of offending their intelligence), just be careful how you phrase it! This type of Road Force balancing is traditionally double the price of standard balancing, but is only worth it IF the tech knows how to use it and is willing to do it correctly. Good luck.....BTW, I just installed a set of Falken AT3W on a F150 yesterday...that is a good looking tread.

Also, most shops will have a scan tool to relearn TPMS sensors, but I'm not sure I understood your comment about TPMS sensor pricing from American Tire Depot....make sure they are just quoting TPMS rebuild kits (i.e. swapping TPMS sensor from your take off wheels and reinstalling them on your new wheels). If you're planning on getting a new set of TPMS sensors for your new wheels you'll likely pad a lot more than that. My cheapest TPMS sensor that is programmable to any vehicle I pay $35 cost per sensor and typically resale them for $70 each plus $25 to program them to the vehicle.

Thanks for the reply. I will use that info to ask the right questions when I have them installed.

I'm keeping my old tires and rims for resale so the TPMS sensors need to stay on the wheels. I'll ask them more about this. For now I'm waiting for the rims to ship to me in a week or so.

They are also on the heavy side. 46lbs. Tha's kinda high for a P tire. I could feel it in acceleration and the eco light wasn't as quick to come on but I haven't driven it enough to know that for a certainty. I'm sure it will affect mileage somewhat, but hope it's not too much. We'll see...

This is what I'm worried about. I really like the A/T3W, but they seem terribly heavy for their size/rating. I'm going to be staying with stock size and can even live with a tiny drop in mileage, but a noticeable change in acceleration is a no-go for me. I can't believe a C-rated KO2 weighs less than this tire in P-rated form!! If it weren't for the weight, I could easily say A/T3Ws would be my next tire.

Can anyone else with 265/70-17 A/T3Ws chime in on acceleration and fuel mileage difference from stock?

I've logged ~20 miles of very remote trails in eastern KY and they did very well. We had plenty of mud, rocks, creeks, etc and I was pretty impressed. I had a buddy there with a trail edition w/ Duratracs and we couldn't notice one vehicle doing better/worse than the other.

I'm assuming you're referring to the DBBB? I took my ORP thru there in October with 285/70 Wildpeaks and they did fantastic. I am planning a trip to go back sometime in Feb. If you guys would be interested, PM me.


Side note- still no damn snow here in southern Indiana. Pretty pissed, everyone else around us gets hit. So, i have yet to test these in the white stuff.

Per Falken's website this size A/T3W weighs 47lbs.
Per BFGoodrich website this size KO2-C rated weighs 45lbs

KP, I have the stock sized A/T3Ws and I did not notice any appreciable change in acceleration or mileage. Just make sure you have them inflated correctly!

That is awesome, I choose local myself, however add 50$ a tire without mount and balance for up here in Alaska.

Your wheel size may be too large for the tire width. Check the Falken site for the specs on this tire and see what rim size they specify. A drop down menu will appear showing all the tire sizes. If it's a LT tire you may need to select "truck tires" to find it listed. Same for the Cooper tires.

And why buy SCS rims to fit stock tires on? The advantage of a wider rim is fitting a wider tire, like 275 or 285 or larger. I like the SCS Ray10 wheels but looks are not the only thing I'm trying to achieve with a wider rim.

Discount Tire was able to get it to work.

I went with stock size since I'm not getting lifted and didn't want to deal with any rubbing issues. I'm currently rubbing and have to do the fender line mod this weekend.

You can definitely tell the weight increase is there, but that's mainly from the feel of the road and "suspension" differences (obviously, not actual suspension changes, just the different thickness of the tires) between the Falkens and the stock tires.

I don't have any quantitative data, but acceleration feels no different: if I gun it, the 4Runner will get up and go like it did before. I do pretty much all city driving, so gas mileage hasn't seemed to change at all.

The only thing I really notice is that they "feel" heavier and they tend to track grooves and imperfections in the road a whole lot more than the stock ones do.

Lift size and trimming

Just installed Falken AT3W in a 285/75/17 flavor mounted to RRW2 17x8.5 wheels. The tread is a bit mild for my taste, but given the cost it was better then the alternatives in this size.

I'm about to install a 3" lift with ToyTec 3"/5100 up front, and Metal tech LTs/5125(26"+)

How difficult was it to fit the 285/75? I was looking at the 285/70 but if the 75 will fit with moderate trimming, I may go that way

The 285/75/17 is a great tire size, all my friends and I run it.

You will need a cab mount chop, and if you don't have aftermarket bumper, likely trim some of the front off. Not too hard.

I have about 8k on mine. I running the stock size. I lost about 1 mpg with theses but I will probably stick these going forward though. I will post a full review later

As much as humanly possible unless you have good UCA's that you can adjust caster/camber with.

That's a real bummer. 2 mpg is actually quite significant- if you lost 2 mpg on average, that would be around a 10% loss. With today's fuel costs in my area (which are quite low) I'd be looking at an additional $550 or so over the life of the tires. If fuel were a lot closer to $3/gallon, it would be more like $750 over the course of 40k miles.

Then again, I didn't buy a 4Runner for its fuel mileage.
