New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

Picked up my brand new 4Runner TE yesterday and had the local tire center put on Wildpeak A/T3W this morning.

Shop accidentally ordered and installed the E-rated tires whereas I wanted P since this is a commuter vehicle. I noticed when he drew up the invoice and the line item was wrong.

They were actually charging me the price for P-rated so it would've been a great deal if I wanted the E-rated, but I didn't want/need the extra bulk and weight.

They sent a guy on a dedicated run to pick up the correct tires from the distributor and re-swapped everything to the right product, everything Road Force balanced and looks awesome. As usual, great service from Steelcase T&M in the Toronto area.

Haven't been up to top highway speed with them yet but they feel smooth to me, hardly any noise.

Just got my 285X70X17 Falken AT3W put on on Saturday. The shop had them inflated to about 46 PSI.

1. What PSI are Y'all running?
2. Anyone running the 285s have an issue with their VSC (traction control) light permanently staying on?

I have them in 285/70/17 also but running them at 40psi. I have zero issues with my vsc light.

Mmmm, Salsa Red. I nearly bought a TE in that colour and sometimes still wish I had.

As far as tire pressure goes here's a quote from a thread specifically about it that I found this week after putting on some LT285/70/17 Cooper A/TW. I have 38psi in mine as per the info below.

...There are a lot of differing opinions about what psi to run different tires at in this forum, some of them rather dangerous. This shouldn't be the case as there are standardized tables to determine this information.

I'm posting URLs for three Load Inflation Tables from Goodyear, Bridgestone, and Toyo, they all essentially say the same thing.

In a nutshell: A stock Trail Edition 5th gen 4Runner with a P265/70/17 tire should be run at 32 psi cold. From the tables (with the 10% reduction for a P-rated tire on an SUV), the load capacity for this tire is 2205 lbs.

When you switch to an LT tire, you need to make sure that your psi allows for your load capacity of the new tire to equal or be higher than 2205 lbs. If you stay with a 265 tire, your psi should be at 44. This gives you a load capacity of 2219 lbs (40 psi is 2075 lbs and 45 psi is 2255 lbs). If you run lower than this, you are overworking the tire. If you move up to a 285/70/17 tire, as many here have done, if you run it at 38 psi then your load capacity is 2231 lbs (35 psi is 2105 and 40 psi is 2315 lbs). This holds true even if the tire is a C, D, or E load range.

Here are the tables:

Hopefully, this will help to resolve some of the misinformation about tire pressure on this forum.

Anyone had any trouble balancing their AT3's? I am having a wobble with mine and have had them balanced multiple times. Thinking I've got a couple bad apples.

Other than that these tires are amazing and it could possibly be something else with the truck.

Negative. Mine balanced well. The only issue I have with the tire thus far us they hold Pebbles tighter than Bam Bam.

I have had my Falkens on for about 6500 miles now, and have had a wobble also. My steering wheel shook back and forth from 50-60MPH. I had them re-balanced and now it shakes at 60 MPH. I had the tires rotated to stay within the guidelines of the warranty, and still have the shake at 60 MPH but seems a little worse.

Other then the wobble the tires are great and seem to be wearing well.

Lol, that's like saying 'other than the leak my roof works well'...

I don't get how people are OK with wobbling tires that they purchase. It makes no sense.

Both of my 5th Gens have had the 55-60 mph wobble. Tried different wheels, tires, multiple attempts at balancing them and it never went away. Not sure I'd blame these tires for it.

First time I installed I had a small balancing issue when balanced by Firestone.

I purchased FJ wheels and had the dealer mount/balance and no issues since then.

that's overinflated for P tires

40 actually falls well within the max psi range and works well for me. Discount Tire had them inflated at the "recommended" 32 psi and they were way too low. I've been running them at 40 for about 5,000 miles now and have not one complaint. I'll try 38 again but they always look to have too much bulge.

Can't wait for snow so I can test out the snowflake rating.

Look at the load inflation chart, unless your vehicle is significantly heavier than factory it's overinflated

Has anyone taken the AT3W through the snow yet? I'm just wondering how these will do, especially considering they are severe snow rated.

I also noticed on Falken's website the LT 265/70/17 of the AT3W isn't far off from the overall diameter of a normal LT 275/70/17 tire. The LT Falken comes in at a 31.9" diameter, a normal 275 is 32.2". Maybe this is why they don't have a 275 for the 17" wheel size. Their P rated 265 is 31.7" which is larger than my current Cooper AT3's in LT 265 C range load.

I can't make up my mind between the LT or the P in 285/70/17.

Who's wheeled with these? Hows the sidewalls compare between LT and P series? I like the fact the P series is lighter and will offer a better ride etc but I don't want to risk a sidewall puncture being aired down on the trail. My tire shop keeps telling me I'll be fine with the P series but I read different online. Any advice?

I think I posted this earlier in the thread, but I talked to someone directly at Falken and they informed me that they are both 2-ply sidewalls, however, the LTs have a little more reinforcement. They also have different tread compounds, and the P's will show wear slightly faster. If you are using tire weight as a comparison, the stock size P-rated is about the same weight as a LT-C KO2, so take that for what it's worth.

I'm running the P-rated ones (265/70) and wheel with them w/out issues so far. I've managed to gouge my wheels a couple times, but my sidewalls are still fine. I don't do a ton of wheeling, maybe once a month or so.

I'm pretty sure you did I remember reading it somewhere but couldn't find it again. I emailed falken and never got a reply back. But extra reinforcement where in the sidewalls or tread plies?

Weight isn't so much a issue it would just be nice. But I'd take the extra weight over bfg never been impressed I had some on my ranger and they chunked really bad. Granted it was spooled but my locked dodge has never had a issue with general grabber red labels or yokohama geolanders.

I'm probably looking into this to much and should just go with the LT

The sidewalls are reinforced (allegedly) on the LT. They have thicker treads (I think 19/32 vs 14/32), and being LT-E are in general just stronger. I forgot to mention, they did not have a suggested PSI to air down for either tire, but he did say they just had a test run in a truck and ran a less than 18PSI.

The reason I mentioned weight was because if the P-rated is the same weight as a C-rated, maybe it has a more rubber in places to make it stronger? I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, so that's pure speculation.

I just received my 265/70/17 Falken AT3 tires for my Ray10 SCS wheels (going on my 2006 4Runner).

The sidewall is quite soft compared to my KO2 E-rated (2ply vs 10ply).
