New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

I see the Wildpeak 285/70r17 A/T3W come in two styles. E1 and SL. E1 is cheaper 8lbs lighter with 5% less tread depth than the SL. What are you folks going with when choosing between the two? The lighter tire with less tread depth or heavier with more depth. Both have 33 overall diameter. What's most important while choosing between the two?? I'm going with 1.75 bilstein lift in the front and bilstein in the rear with 1" cornfed spacers. I'm also going with the FN f(x) pro wheels. At first I was going to go with BFG K02 275/70r17 but I'm liking the reviews on Wildpeak and price. Also, 285 Wildpeak (E1) are 5lbs lighter than the 275 BFG KO2s. Looks like with the FN/Wildpeak I can save on weight all around. Thanks for the input.

Depends on what you're wanting to do. I've heard the lighter rating is still capable enough off road. I went with the lighter because it's my daily.

I ran the lighter P rated 285 Wildpeaks on my last trip to Ouray, CO. I did pretty much all the main trails/passes up there and had zero issues with the P rated. I even aired down to 20psi and no issues. However, I opted to buy the E rated 285's for my new Runner this time.

I just bought another set of these in 285/70/17 Load Range E for $669 shipped to my door after a $75 mail in rebate from Discount Tire. I would have bought the P rated for $613 shipped, but I plan to do a fair amount of off-roading in this new Runner I just got yesterday. I don't think the E rated tires are needed on this type of vehicle, but if I slash a sidewall out in the middle of the desert I'll be kicking myself in the ass for buying P rated. I really wanted to try the Toyo RT's, but for half the price in the same size and E rated, the Wildpeaks were just too good of a deal to pass up.

That's hard price to beat, Falkens are always popular on the track, good, quality tires that are priced right.

Keep opinions and comments coming. I really appreciate the info. Off-roading won't be too extreme, just some family camping trips every few months.

Went early to get my DTD purchased tires installed but shortly after they started, 1 tire had a bad bead. Disappointing day since I had to travel a bit of distance and the wait time for them to repack all my boxes and get the stock tire/wheels back on. DTD called me back shortly after I left a vmail(waited 10 mins) and addressed the issue. Was told a credit will be given for the 4th tire. Hope it goes thru. Will need to wait another week or so.

I believe I'm seeing the same deals directly on DTD and eBay. Why go the eBay route if same deal available on their main site?

From my understanding, "W" means Winter. As in they are rated for severe winter conditions.

I'd like to know if there is any visible difference that's able to be seen with the eye between the two other than just having the "W" added to the sidewall.

Edit to add: after doing some searching, I'm not even able to find a Falken AT3 tire that is not a "W" model. Searching for just a Falken Wildpeak AT3 shows nothing. They are all "W" rated.

W is for: Wear, Winter and Wet

I have 10,000 miles on my stock size P rated AT3Ws. I just did my second rotation on them and they look great. Even wear, lots of tread left, and no concerns. I'm running at about 33 psi.

As for performance, these have been great. I had my Bilstein 5100s installed at the same time and I'm also running SpiderTrax 1.25" spacers. I also did an alignment so I knew I was getting a clean fresh start with my new setup. I have zero shimmy, zero vibration, and zero concerns. These ride nearly as quite and comfortable as Highways tires. They have performed very well for me off road and in snow although I haven't had them in much mud yet. Hoping to change that really soon.

My one and only issue is that my Runner doesn't feel as comfortable above 80 mph as it did before. That's to be expected though. That's my one and only complaint. I've recommended these to everyone I know and at least two friends have thrown these on their Wranglers after seeing them and hearing my experience. I'd buy them again if I had to purchase right now.

What size tire are you at with that lift? 285, 275 or stock 265? I ordered 285 and hoping to get a better fitting for these larger tires by putting them on the FN FX Pro wheel which is a bit wider than the stack Trd Off Road wheel.

Thanks for the write up. Do you have any pictures you can share? I'm thinking about going back to stock size, but concerned how it'll look with my current lift.
