New Falken AT tire (A/T3W)

Glad to hear you're liking them! I've been very pleased with my set of LT E AT3Ws. Was annoying though at the beginning as the tireshop found ALL 4 to be out of round but Falken replaced them pretty quickly.



Also, really liking the clean look of that roof rack. Is that a yakima?

Thanks and if you’re referring to my vehicle, it’s actually a Rola brand rack. I found an amazon deal on a used-excellent condition rack and the price was too good to pass, even if it sucked. It hasn’t sucked at all. It’s been a great rack and was in perfect condition. You can buy extensions for it too if you want it bigger. This is the original size and works well to not block my sunroof or interfere with opening my hatch.

Back on topic. I’m going in for alignment in a week or so. I’m wondering if I’m slightly out which may be leading to increased noise. I’ll report back if this is the case. Otherwise loving the tire and I’m actually catching more looks with this tire than any other rubber I’ve ran. Same was true when the tire first came out and I ran them years ago. I see a ton of people checking them out at traffic lights or in a parking lot. Never got this with my other rubber. Surprising but also interesting.

I’m really interested in this noise. Wildpeaks and Ko2 are same price. So it’s a toss up but noise is ranked higher than mud performance for me.

Okay I think I finally have a good answer to the noise issue with the Wildpeak A/T3W. My first post on this thread mentioned the noise and vibration I was getting with my Falken. In my second post I mentioned having them rebalanced (installer claimed there was no noise or vibration and both times were road force but never provided results/numbers) It seemed to be better but still noisy.

I did a 500 mile road trip and once again noticed a cyclical vibration (10 seconds smooth then ten seconds of vibration). Still noisy kind of a fluttering noise like a tire with cupping or failing tread. The tires did beautifully off road on 35 miles of Jeep trails. Unfortunately the highway and road issues were driving me crazy.

Went to a different tire shop and paid for a road force balance. Results came back that two tires were on the high end of barely acceptable according to the technician. Two of the tires were balanced with incorrect amount of weight as well. The Road Force numbers: LF - 6 pounds, RF - 12 pounds, LR - 22 pounds, RR - 21 pounds. He said anything over 18-20 would cause noticeable vibration issues.

I personally rotated the rear tires to the front and confirmed that the noise and vibration moved to the front. Next I contacted the online tire retailer and requested warranty replacements on the two high road force tires. The replacements were installed the next day by shop number 2. They road force balanced them and now all is well.

Did a 200 mile highway trip and now I have relatively quiet tires that don’t vibrate annoyingly. They’re definitely louder than the stock tires, but nowhere near as loud as the messed up pair of four I received the first time.

Bottom line, make sure you get Falken Wildpeak A/T3W tires road force balanced. If they’re loud or vibrate request replacements right away and they’ll make it right.

My P285/70-17s appear to be well balanced. They drive great and although some have a little more weight than others, I’d say they seem fine.

My noise complaint is of the frequency of the hum they produce. They’re still what I would consider quite for a hybrid AT, but I’d say at this point they’re barely a notch under the KO2’s sound increase at 5,000 miles.

Sound is so hard to gauge. I would not consider these loud but they ARE at AT tire of a more aggressive design so expect noise accordingly.

Pretty much the same experience I had, however I had to replace all 4. Its all good now though!

I think that everyone interested in tires will find the new revisions to the Discount Tire website interesting.

You can now search by vehicle and then by performance parameters and you get the tires ranked from best to worst in accordance with the testing I mentioned earlier.

Notable: P-metric Michelins and the P-metric Wildpeak rule the world when it comes to street. And as [MENTION=140439]Decipher[/MENTION] and I have proven, the P-metric Wildpeak has great traction offroad, from AZ and UT rock to Midwestern mud.

By contrast, the LT Widlpeak scores much lower and also much lower than the LT MIchelins.

The Ridge Grappler LTC scores very poorly and the KO2 is at the bottom of the pack.

The best scoring LTs are the Michelins and the Hankook ATM as well as the heavy-duty Wrangler MTR which is notable.

EDIT: THat's with my zip code, not sure it matters though.
Also, this type of search may only be possible with the stock size tire. I tried an optional size for our Subaru and the rankings did not show up. They did in the OEM size.

Are the rankings based on user reviews? The Hankook Dynapro ATMs have always had stellar user reviews but they don’t seem to have much notoriety in the off road world most likely due to rather boring sidewall design.

No, it is whatever independent testing they use, those are actual tests, that's what they told me by email.

But I have no time to look into what "Treadwell" is right now which is the branding that goes with the rankings.

I looked more into it and I appreciate the info. What Discount ranks as “best” has lower consumer ratings than the next tier which made it more than suspect to me.
