New FN Overlander Wheels

You can use the same lug nuts as stock. I'd make sure one of them is locking though.

Another thing is to make sure they do not use power an air wrench - these should only be hand tightened.

Dustin sells nice lugs with the FN wheels if you want them.i think they were $30-40. I can post a picture if you want.

I'm running the ones he sent me with my rims. Discount Tire is telling me that they don't go on enough threads. Apparently they only cover 4 when they need to cover 7. I took my truck in for a steering wheel vibration and was told the lugs are too short and don't cover enough threads. They wouldn't take them off and remount them for liability issues...

Did you contact Dustin about this?

Ordered the overlanders spec A in gunmetal from Dustin last week. He included lugs for the wheels as he stated the stock lugs from my SR5 won't do. Will I be in the same boat as you? Planning on running stock size 265's....probably BFG's.

FN Wheels Overlander

Thank you all for your contributions to this post! I wish I had time to be more active on the forum as I used to be, but the workload has become much more demanding as we've been selling more and more wheels.

I will get better / more photos of the wheels in various finishes uploaded soon, and we'll have them up on the website soon.

The purpose of this wheel was to create a 17" design similar to the FJ Trail Team wheels from the last few years of the FJ (also came on the Tacoma Baja / '15 TRD Pro model). As you all may or may not know, the TRD wheel only came in a 16" diameter, which won't clear 4th Gen 4Runner Sport/Limited brakes or any of the 5th Gen 4Runner brakes. Our 17" Overlander clears all the brakes.

I also wanted to make a "Spec A" version which is has a fully finished, non-simulated beadlock lip for customers who don't want the simulated beadlock along with a "Spec B" version that has the simulated beadlock machined as part of the wheel. One of the short comings of the 16" TRD SE wheel was the removable simulated "beadlock" trim ring which was prone to getting debris stuck between the ring and the wheel itself, leading to a variety of issues. By machining the "ring" into the wheel and keeping it all one solid piece as we've done, we were able to eliminate those issues. By also offering the Spec A version of the FN Wheels Overlander we are able to give you guys a version of the wheel that doesn't have the ring, but also doesn't have a bunch of exposed holes in the lip like the original TRD wheel has if you leave the ring off.

I'm very pleased to see that everyone is enjoying the Overlander wheels. Thank you all again very, very much!

I also would like to address the questions from CC4R as I have received a couple calls about his post, and I spoke with CC4R at length today to get more details. He did leave out a little bit of info from his first post, which I'll add below followed by comments.
CC4R installed BFG KO2 tires on his Overlanders, but the tires came off of his original 17" Trail Edition OEM wheels. The tires have about 15,000 +/- miles on them, and he had to have them balanced / re-balanced five (5) times on the OEM wheels. Per CC4R, he always had some vibrations with his BFG KO2 tires on his OEM wheels, and the vibrations persisted (or possibly got worse) when he took them off and installed them on his new wheels.

In my 20-ish years experience in this industry, this is not an uncommon issue with the BFG KO (original) or now the BFG KO2 (new) tires. The KO2 tires are commonly out of round, and they can be difficult to impossible to balance on any set of wheels. They often require multiple attempts at balancing, and even then go out of round quickly and require re-balancing often. It wouldn't be unusual to take them off a set of wheels and install onto another, or even to do a tire rotation and then find that you picked up a vibration where you previously didn't have one (possibly because the tire was in the back and now it's in the front). Please don't take my word for it, there are many reviews from customers on BFGs website regarding balance and vibration issues (not just Toyota 4Runner or even Toyota truck owners either):

https://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire/bf-goodrich/all-terrain-t-a-ko2/

The problem seems to be manufacturing inconsistencies. When the tires are good, they are really good, but when they aren't, they are really bad. Based on my limited data from speaking to customers over the years and installing BFG KO / KO2 tires (when I offered installation services), I would say that 75%-80% of the tires have no issues, but 20%-25% will be difficult or impossible to balance. I have nothing against BFG as a company, and harbor no ill-will by stating these observations. I know from a manufacturing standpoint it is much easier to make a precision CNC machined aluminum wheel as close to perfectly round as possible rather than make an aggressive, multi layered, multi material tire perfectly round. With the BFG KO2 being one of the more aggressive all-terrain tires, it stands to reason that it's also going to be harder to make them true/consistently round. All of our wheels are checked and verified at multiple points with precise Mitutoyo instruments to ensure quality and consistency.

Regarding the separate issue of the lug nut question from CC4R - this is an issue that has come up with Discount Tire (America's Tire in California) stores in the last year or so. I know that the issue stems from one (or maybe more, but at least one) of their stores installing wheels for a customer who had inexpensive, over the stud type wheel spacers (not the billet wheel adapter with built-in studs type, but the type that slides over the original studs and reduces stud engagement). They had a customer (or customers) who lost wheels on the road as a result of their installation of the wheels with these types of wheel spacers.

As a result they've instituted an ever changing, often misinterpreted corporate policy within their stores. We've explained and proven the engineering behind the stud engagement with our wheels and the lug nuts we provide. I've also personally shown our data alongside Toyota OE wheel measurements to Discount Tire indicating that our wheels engage the same amount of stud as certain OEM Toyota TRD wheels that use the same style (conical seat) lug nuts on the same 12mm diameter / 21.5mm length studs. Stated more simply, this means that Toyota engineers also agree with the data regarding stud engagement with this type wheel, lug nut and stud combination.

We have tens of thousands of customers (myself included as I own three Toyota trucks all equipped with FN Wheels) driving thousands and thousands of miles on our wheels every year. Safety and quality are our number one concern. We've never had any safety issues with our wheels and/or lug nuts, because there aren't any issues. All of the engineering data for our Toyota truck wheels is tested and verified before we ever sell a wheel to a customer. This includes properly machining and drilling for maximum stud engagement on Toyota trucks (including the short front studs) without compromising the integrity of the wheel itself.

It's important to use only the lug nut hardware that we provide, as the hardware has been properly selected to be used with our wheels. If you choose to use a different lug nut, it is important to check with us first, to ensure compatibility (just as you would when changing out any other parts on your vehicle). Our wheels are machined as deeply as possible to maximize stud engagement, and in the case of the Overlander and certain other models of our wheels where applicable, we also drill the wheels with lug openings just slightly larger than the diameter of your Toyota OEM 12mm studs. This ensures a snug fit over the studs and maximizes torque retention on the studs themselves (in addition to the wheels themselves being machined as deeply as possible in the lug area to maximize length of engagement).

I always feel like the proof is in the pudding, and one of our great customers has put his FN Wheels Overlanders thru tens of thousands of VERY hard miles and photo documented almost all of the miles here:

If I can answer any further questions about our wheels in general, or the way they fit Toyota trucks/SUVs in specific, please do not hesitate to contact me:

Shoutout to Dustin FNWheels for getting back to me. It seems that Discount Tire is giving me the run around and throwing company policy out as an excuse to not balance my wheels because the lugs do not meet their requirements. I will be going to Toyota tomorrow to get my tires balanced. In no way did I mean to come off upset or to bash Dustin/FN Wheels. Customer service has been top notch and I'm loving my new FN Overlander Spec B's!

Quick question....with the width of these wheels, how much rubbing if any, should I expect on my stock SR5 with for example 265 bfg's?

No problem sir. I didn't think you were bashing us in anyway, but we just wanted to publicly address your concerns in the event that anyone else had similar experiences with an installer. Your lug/stud engagement is completely safe. I believe your balance issue lies with the BFG KO2 tires that you've had to rebalance a few times on multiple sets of wheels.

Good question, thank you. I'm not sure what year your 4Runner is, but for the last three generations here are some rules of thumb with all terrain tires:

3rd Generation 4Runner:
 • 265/65R17 would work best to have the least chance of rubbing with stock suspension (given the age of the 3rd Gen 4Runner, if the suspension is worn you may still have some rubbing on plastic trim).
 • 265/70R17 would be the largest size we'd suggest with stock suspension. You will have some rubbing on plastic trim that will require modification.

4th Generation 4Runner:
 • 265/65R17 would work best to have the least chance of rubbing with stock suspension, but you'll likely rub slightly on the front mud flaps.
 • 265/70R17 will work with stock suspension, but you will rub on the front mud flaps and the nub on the bottom of the front fender liner with stock suspension. You can fix this by trimming the plastic from the affected areas.

5th Generation 4Runner (2010-13):
 • 265/70R17 will work best with the least chance of rubbing with stock suspension. Trail Edition 4Runners shouldn't have any rubbing. SR5 and Limited may have a small amount of rubbing on plastic trim / mud flaps.
 • 275/70R17 will work on the Trail Edition with minimal modifications. SR5 and Limited models will require modification to plastic trim pieces.

5th Generation 4Runner (2014-2018):
 • 265/70R17 will work best with the least chance of rubbing with stock suspension on SR5 and Trail Edition / TRD Offroad 4Runners. There shouldn't be any rubbing at all, but it is possible there will be minimal rubbing on the fender liner and/or front mud flaps (easily remedied). Limited models may have a small amount of rubbing on plastic trim. TRD Pro models should not have any rubbing at all.
 • 275/70R17 will work on SR5 and Trail Edition / TRD Offroad models with minimal adjustments to the fender liner and front mud flaps. TRD Offroad models may or may not need the same small adjustments. Limited models will require plastic trim modifications.
 • 285/70R17 has been reported to fit on stock suspension TRD Pro models with some plastic modification. We have not tested/verified this tire size on a stock suspension 4Runner TRD Pro as of the time of writing this list, so I cannot say how much trimming / modification of plastics would be required.

Are these wheels no longer available? They aren't on the site....

They are still available.

The FN website does not show all wheels available. If you do a search on the Forum, you will find posts I've made where I have pictures of the FN wheels that Dustin shared with me of his other wheels.
