New gal on the block

HOWDY!

I just joined the fray and I am proud (or maybe foolish) to say I just bought a 1996 / 5-speed manual / 2.7 4-cylinder - 4Runner!

The foolish part: high miles with 259k but...absolutely no rust /everything works! / top end of engine was rebuilt @ 201k. Paid $3500.

I had been looking at lower mileage vehicles for around $5500-$6800 with the 3.4 V6 but this came up in the area / we drove it / sounded great, felt healthy and smelled good. (Can't take those dang sweet smelling air fresheners!)

I live in Moab, Utah (26 years) and got this to tootle around the redrocks.

Well, enough about me. I have been perusing this site for a long time, lusting over 4runners ~ so I am happy to meet y'all!

Any tips, tricks or cool tech advise is most welcome!

Kaki, Does your new jewel, by any chance, have hand-crank windows?
If so, you're the envy of all of us out there that never quite bought into the electric motor-powered window thing that was pushed on us by the tyrannical majority who seem to like them just fine.
I recommend getting the original owner's manual if you don't have it.

Since you have the 5-speed trans---thus eliminating the possibility of the trans-cooler failure(Pink Milkshake)---, the only other mechanical thing that has a possibility of---and a reputation for--- surprise catastrophic failure is the Lower Ball Joints, or LBJs.
There are two LBJs on the vehicle; one on each side, front only.
Because Toyota had a brain freeze when designing this particular part on this generation of 4Runners and Tacomas, it behooves you to check, or have checked, the condition of the LBJs.
If they are the original ones from 1996, I think most here would advise you to have the LBJs(and their accompanying 4 bolts each) replaced with new OEM parts.

I really wish mine was a 4 cylinder with crank windows, black bumpers, and no rust/ paint scars from where I took off my fender flares
