new guy door lock problems spontaneously activate

Thanks to all that are on this forum and put the information out for all to see and use. My question is I have a 01 4runner and the door locks are activating spontaneously/ erratically whenever they won't and constantly. I removed the 15 amp door lock fuse and they just do it while driving now. I am thinking it is the ubc module. Does anyone have any other thoughts or suggestions? And does anyone know where I can buy one that does not cost 500 dollars? thanks for any input.

It happens all the time throughout the car being on? If it does there just might be a tiny slit on the circuit board that's causing power to flicker. I had problems with my auto window control and power locks also, i fixed it by bridging the tracks with some 18 gauge wire i had lol

Yes it does happen now only when driving once the 4runner is started. Before I pulled the fuse it happened all the time ,the locks would spontaneously lock and unlock on there own.

Yeah man hopefully is that, when I priced that assembly at the dealer it was about 400 lol i fixed it for free! Just look for tiny brown/burnt areas in the tracks and be careful not to solder two wrong ones together

Yes the hardest part is putting the smoke back in the wires when you solder the wrong things together.

when i had this issue it was caused by the door lock locator on the rear gate. Apparently, part of the lock cylinder includes an electronic cap that tells the car the physical location of the lock, so the car knows if the doors are in the locked or open position. Well, my rear gate lock cylinder was a little askew in the bezel from me forcing it with the key. Because the lock cylinder was askew, just a little, it confused the electronic lock locator causing the ghost locking and unlocking. It was a real issue and I had no control over the locks at all. Finally, to solve the issue I removed the rear lift gate lock cylinder and it solved the problem 100%. The lock cylinder is plugged into a wire harness and it can simply be removed and unplugged. I no longer have a rear gate key cylinder put it still locks and unlocks with the rest of the doors.

I had this same problem with the front drivers door. I replaced that electronic cap with a new Toyota part and no more ghost locks/unlocks.

Possessed door locks

Bumping an old thread but just started happening to me tonight. It's the weirdest thing - all of the sudden the locks kept trying to unlock and the rear window would roll down randomly. Sometimes I would try to roll the rear window up and it would be completely unresponsive. Does't matter if the car is running or the key is in the ignition. Pulled the battery out of the fob with not change. Ended up pulling the power lock fuse to stop them from actuating. Because it is the door locks AND the rear window I am leaning towards an issue with the rear door lock. Will take apart tomorrow and investigate.

New symptom - When I turn the ignition the door lock as they should but immediately unlock. Its similar to when you try to lock your doors with the keys in the ignition. I am still leaning toward the rear power window relay as the culprit because when I unplug it everything works as it should (except my ability to roll the rear window obviously).

Toyota wants $500 for a new one and of course they are non returnable. Going to try the local pick and pulls first.

Turn 180 and inspect harness to rear door at upper left . Easy to pull interior panel trim at headliner. Unplug connector and fish it out,peel insulation back and look for harness damage

Will try that tomorrow. I was able to pick up the rear window relay for $20 at my pick & pull but that did not solve the issue... On the bright side at least I didn't spend the $500 for a new one.

The wires and connectors all appear to be in perfect shape. Any other thoughts?

Try a wiggle test with key on, switches as well it will be "tough" without a helper.
Harness does look good..but best to test it.

I’m having a similar issue

02 limited Having some locking issues.
So installed a wing and had to drill in the hatch to do so...(not sure if that’s the culprit but just a thought) after that the truck would act like I hit the panic button every time it was locked and I hit the unlock on the fob. And after that the locks would continue to try and lock while sitting in the car. Assuming I was dumb and didn’t seal the holes in the tailgate I ordered another “tailgate ECU” as I thought it was shorted. Get the new ecu in and everything works besides the key fob. Tried reprogramming it and still no luck. Any ideas on what it might be? Wires look good inside the loom as well. And with the new ecu the locks are still locking by themselves. Making me believe it’s not the tailgate ecu
