Hey, guys, I may soon be the new driver of a 1999 4Runner 4wd and was wondering if there's anything that I need to look for? It has some slight body damage and the timing belt has already been replaced. I've driven it a few times and it drives straight and smooth, especially considering it has 234k miles on it. Here's a couple of pictures I have. It needs a new bumper and it has a dent on the drivers side quarter panel and a scrape on the passenger side quarter

Welcome!!

Thanks! I took some more pictures of it today to show the body damage and the fact that it is an SR5 (I didn't know for sure)

I really like it. The black pick up next to it is what I drive now but I've wanted something with 4wd for a long time and this 4R has really taken the cake. Hopefully it goes from my moms "rental" to mine soon lol

Welcome. Since the timing belt has been changed, I would just ensure the drive train, and transfer case are in good working order. Fluid changes, and check body for rust.....

Howdy from a couple hours west. If the timing belt has already been changed and everything else mechanical checks out (especially valve cover gaskets) I'd say go for it IF the price is right and you're ok with the body damage.

If you haven't already I'd do some research on what it would cost you to get a new front bumper/valance and then get on Craigslist (Fayetteville, Eastern NC, Raleigh, Wilmington) and check the comparable to see if the price is fair once adjusted for the damage.

Thanks all for the welcomes! This belongs to my uncle at the moment and me and my mom are kind of sharing it since we are down a vehicle. I just drove it almost 300 miles and it handled it like a champ. Hopefully we can get things figured out soon enough. I was thinking an aftermarket bumper? I know I want a brush guard but I haven't decided if I would put another stock bumper on or get an aftermarket one

There are some sick aftermarket bumpers out there if you can shell out for them. the 3rd gen's seem to have an axle seal problem; I just purchased at 98 SR5 and learned the hard way to do my research first. I would check for that.
Also, I'm in wilmington, so let me know if you're cruisin in the neighborhood!

That's not too far from where I live actually! I've been doing a bit of research to figure out if this is something I really wanna get into. So far, it's looking good, a few things I have to look for/do to get a decent vehicle out of it. The seat is a lot more comfortable then the one in my Chevy. I didn't find my self re positioning my a$$ after a couple hours. My only complaint after driving it 4 hours is that I wish the gas tank was a bit bigger

Edit: I'm around the Lumberton/Fayetteville area. In a small town called Fairmont

yeah the 4runner definitely has a small tank for its size. I like the 4runners because they are so easy and cheap to work on.

The truck I drive has a 26? gallon tank and I can make the 286 road trip I made Friday with half a tank left when I get where I'm going. I had to fill the 4Runner about halfway. Which really isn't that big a deal because if it had a bigger tank, it wouldn't be a big difference between the pickup and the 4R. And you're definitely right about cheap. I was looking at after market bumpers and it's cheaper to get an aftermarket bumper for the 4R then it is to just get a stock HD bumper for my 01 Silverado. If I can't get this exact 4R, I'll be shopping around for another 3rd gen SR5

Figured I'd bump this thread. Finally, a year later, steps are being taken. Once I can find a job, I've been looking for the past 6 months but only one interview and that didn't go well, I'll start making payments to my uncle. I know it'll be in good shape when I get it and he'll be a bit more lenient then a dealership
