hi all, i'm new to toyota, new to 4runners...i actually don't have one yet, but i am looking at a '97 limited with 148k miles for $8900. so:

1) is this a good deal?
2) what types of things should i look for?
3) any other advice?

i'm actually debating between this and a '97 jeep grand cherokee with 97k miles and a V8 engine...help me decide!!!

depends on how much you want to spend. toyotas have a good reputation for lasting a long time, but 148k miles is quite a few. im sure you can find one with less miles, closer to that of the jeep you were looking at, or less than that. i wouldnt get a jeep with 97k miles though. not too dependable. its all up to you, and what you want to spend. but i dont think that 8900 is a killer deal for a truck with 148k miles.

how much should i try to haggle for then? thanks for the reply?

you can find them all over. just look around. i have seen a 2001 limited with 52k for $14,500. that is a deal. just keep your eyes open, and dont be afraid to pick up the car flyers at the grociery store. also, check the papers. i found mine in one of the flyers. exactly what i wanted. 4cyl, 5spd, 16"wheels, 4x4 with only 62k on it. the truck was just turning 5yrs old then, and i got it for 12,500. just be patient.

well, i'm not looking to spend more than $9000...what should i hold out for since i guess everyone seems to agree that this particular 4runner isn't too good of a deal?

Don't be scared of the higher mileage vehicles. As the previous poster said Toyotas are have the rep. of lasting a long time. I bought my Landcruiser with 160k miles for $7000. Just keep in mind at that mileage range the vehicles need more maintenance. There is always a good deal out there, you just need to keep looking. I found mine in Autotrader.com

you can get a 96-98 runner with a 110-130K for 8K.

148k miles is too many for $9000.

if you want this one, haggle down to around $7K. if they try too hard to keep it up, walk away. you can find better deals.
