New guy on the block EDIT: sway bar question

Hey everyone. glad to see that i could find a big 4 runner forum site so quick! i just bought myself a used 2001 sr5 with some hefty lil options.

but i did have a few questions legal wise as well as toyota wise.

one thing i wish to do is tint the tail lights, and the turning lights, and i was wondering what the legal limit in california is in this case.

also i would like to get a sport scooped hood, even though it serves no purpose but to make my car look pretty. how much is is for a factory hood from the dealer, or were can i find a factory style hood? if anyone out there has one they want to trade for a stock 2001 sr5 hood, let me know. my car is "thunder cloud" grey.

EDIT: so someone else told me that they dropped in some sway bars for their rig. i searched google and i searched this site and didnt find a thing on sway bars. any sugesstions?

As far as tinting your tails, I wouldn't do it. Maybe go for some tails that are black with a clear lense. I was just behind a Camaro today and I would of had no idea he was braking without his 3rd brake light. He had his tails smoked and you can barely see them during the day.
 
but there are so many levels of tinting. i was goin to just do a small amount to where the red still shows through the tint, even with the lights off.

ive actually had that same problem, but his tail lights where solid black. i hate that look

just a lil tint is all i want... :)
 
as far as tail lights in CA i have no idea. i know you cant tint the front windows at all beyond factory. id give a call to your local police station, annonymous of course, and ask them to inform you of the law. im sure they would tell you fairly quickly
 
sounds like ill have to call the fuzz on that one.

as for tinting, i just talked to my local veteran car decal maker and installer (btw he did some awesome work by adding some trd off road logos to my two far back windows on both sides, the bug visor, and the rear wind deflector.) and he sugessted vinal instead of a window tint. hes gonna reasearch some transparent vinals for me. the reason being is because window tint( most of it) is made to fit on the interior of the window, not the exterior. so by using vinal, it will last much longer. plus he can carve out whatever design i want in the tail lights giving a look like no one elses.

I just took him for a ride in my rig with the ISR and Deckplate/Elbow mods and he was speechless!!! :biggrin2:

It's nice to have a guy in town I can talk to about 4Runner stuff. Nobody seems to understand! My friend (Sheldon) who drives a GT thinks that it nets no HP gain and that it is detrimental to the engine. He's just a hater. :p
 
the thing is mike, its a tottaly bitchen mod, but i may just spend the money on a smog legal cold air intake, because then i dont have to put the deckplate on when it rains, and wont have to switch out all the parts to smog it.

Well, IMO, it is worth an extra 15 minutes a year (that's a MAXIMUM number) to save $200 on a cold air kit. The deckplate cost me a grand total of $20, $15 for the plate and $5 for the PVC caps.

I've never put my deckplate cap in except once and that was for a river crossing that was up to my rocker panels,otherwise I just leave it open and rain is never a problem and to seal it up once every couple of years is just like screwing a lid on a jar to pass a visual inspection.

Actually mine passes fine even with the DP open since a little more air won't effect emission results. The techs don't even know what they are looking for.
 
what about with the isr mod? the hose that comes out of the isr is put on that other section. when thats been done it looks like its been modded. any ways or suggestions to make it look stock?
 
Only a few people with insight would actually know what they are looking at. I keep all my mods pretty stock looking under the hood and avoid colored pieces and keep it all black.

Most people who work at those emission stations don't know anything about cars or what a stock one should look like. Even buyers wouldn't notice a capped up deckplate unless it's the small percentage that are aware or the mod.
 
yea, thats true, i guess if i had taken the time to realize that black paint is my friend, i wont have a thing to worry about.

also RonMaiden, where did you get your skidplate?
 
The only reason the dude at the smog place knew that my hoses were on the wrong side of the TB is becuase he had extensive background with the engine (I guess he owned one or something). He told me how common the mod was and that it didn't really effect emissions, but legally speaking he had to fail me. He let me head out to the parking lot for a second and I reinstalled the large silencer and put the hose on it and he retested me for free.

From another member over on yotatech. The brackets are for a Tacoma so I had to make 3" extensions to move the plate forward to fit my "fatlip" bumper.

The plate did come on the '02s with the proper brackets but IMO they move the plate too far forward and down. Mine hugs my bumper perfectly.
 
It's the Toyota OEM plate. It was an option on the Tacomas from '00+ (?) and was included on the SE 4Runners in '02.

You can find them new for around $110 on ebay and used they go for under $100. trdparts4u might have them.

and what did you have to do for the custom brackets? you said you used scrap metal, but what style brackets are used, and what dimensions are you running.... that is if you have that information handy
