New guy with questions.

Hey guys,

This is my first 4runner and first 4wd. I've worked on and owned all kinds of cars but I can tell this is going to be a lot of fun, but I have a few questions.

1996 Toyota SR5
It's a vehicle that has been in my family years and had been in the city for a few years. The engine was rebuilt about 25,000 miles ago and has been kept up fairly well over the years.

Before I even start to think about a lift and mods I need to get it running right.

I have a CEL so I went to local parts stores to get the codes read. I thought all 1996 were OBDII but mine is not. It's OBDI. The diagnostic port under the hood confused a lot of people at Autozone and other various places around town...I was thinking maybe the engine wasn't rebuilt but replaced or maybe I don't have a 1996 or maybe I'm just wrong about stuff...I dunno. I'll try the paper clip method tonight.

Engine idles at 1500..cant check codes so...

Average 15.5 MPG on the highway...that's bad right?

Suspension:

This is my first 4wd so I'm not real sure what it's supposed to feel like but it seems off. Stock with no lift, but feels mushy up front and hard in the back and check out this wheel gap!

I'm sure I'll have lots more questions and look forward to getting to know you folks.

what is the build date on the door jam? DOT, FTSB, CARB and others mandated that in 1996 all vehicles sold in 1996 had to have OBD-II. its generally inside under the dash in the drivers area. but some cars have them in the center console under a removable plate or somewhere in the dash behind a plate. unless for some reason your runner was built in 1995(possible) but being as though it was slated as a 1996 model its highly unlikely it does not have OBD-II

yeah, thats what I thought...but I dont see it....this is the only computer port i see...

Built in january 1996....

Look just above where your right foot would be (over the accelerator pedal).
It's there... it has to be

Post a picture of your drivers side footwell area, the port should be on the inside of the area, behind where the back of the stereo would be. Hope that makes sense.

What about that wheel gap? What is it supposed to be stock?

lol lessons ive learned. just freggin do it!!

anyhow, stock wheel gap varies between every car, but im sure someone here will post up how much is about ~average?

yea your idle is pretty darn high, is that even when warm?

The large hose that's over the top of the intake near the firewall- There is a slice in it right after the clamp which could be causing a vacuum leak and giving you a high idle.

When you are looking for the OBD2 port - one thing that made it hard for me to find is that I was expecting the connector to be facing forward. It isn't - it faces down. So it is easier to find if you get your eyes at a low level and look up at the underneath of the dash.

Yeah...it was right where you guys said it was. I feel really awesome right about now...

And the code is.... P0330!

From what I gather on the forums, it is a knock sensor and its pretty deep in the engine. Can't wait to take it all apart. Anything else I need to replace while I'm doing that?

I'm still researching suspension...
