ok i am brand new so cut me some slack. starting to look at possibly getting a 03-06 4runner. with the price of gas particularly diesel (F20 on 8 in and 38's=not great on mileage at 4.30 a gal) im looking at getting something a lil better on mileage. my wife and i have 3 kids under 5 and it seems like a 4runner would fit the bill. ive been seeing 03's for around 13-15g which is in my price range. been reading reviews and i think out of about 50 reviews i saw 1 negative one. so fill me in guys on these, im like a giant sponge, i want to know everything. basically i want, reliability, mpg above 17-18, and room for five.

Welcome, you've found the right place. If you stick with stock or 1 size over on the tires your mileage goal is reasonable w/ the V6 (2 or4wd). There's nothing bad to say about any 4th gen really. There were some pretty good upgrades to the '06 model year so if you can get an '06 that's good. The mechanical upgrades were actually incorporated in '05 if I'm not mistaken and the '06 has some cosmetic upgrades.

Side-airbags were optional in the model years you're talking about. You might want to look for one that has them... I am a big believer.

I just bought an '05 4Runner with a V6 because of gas mileage, mostly used for metro area driving (minneapolis/st. paul). I think the V6 would have plenty of power...but that's just me.
 
Reliability is why your thinking Toyota. Room for 5? Some Limited and SR5 '04 and newer 4Runners have a 3rd row seat- that might help with all the kids. The v6 has plenty of power and better MPG. In fact I doubt you'd even need the v8 unless your gonna be towing. I'd look for an '04 -you can probably find 2wd one in the $17k range in great condition and low millage. You might spend just a little more than your planning too and get as new as you can, since they've been getting better every year (although I think '05 is the best one out of all of them so far.)

Gas Mileage? HAHA. dont even bother looking at the V8. you would be lucky to see your numbers on the highway with 50mph tailwind! I have made it my mission to get my V8 to get over 20 mpg on the hwy using acetone, seafoam, tire pressure, air filter, plugs etc. All that being said its still an awesome vehicle, just know what you are getting into regarding gas.
 
im already gettin kicked in the you know what as far as gas mileage goes. my only truly reliable vehicle is a 01 F250 with 8 in of lift on 38 i n tires........diesel at that, so 4.50 bucks a gal, i only drive it about 10 miles a week. thank god the wife stays at home so i drive a kia to work. i would just like something a lil more reliable than the kia and that gets more than 12 mpg.
