Hey everyone, made my first post already in the 3rd gen section about a T4R I may be purchasing. I was curious if you guys could explain how the 4x4 system works. I have a 1997 Nissan Pathfinder in the past but I believe it is a different system, any explanation or maybe a link to some faq's and basics would be great as well. Hopefully I will soon be the proud new owner of a cheap broken 4runner!!!:headslap: (won't stay broken for long, just a headgasket :D)

Also,it has 240k miles, would I be foolish to think it will run much longer once I fix the headgasket? I know these are amazing trucks, but is 240k plus pushing my luck?

IIRC, the earlier 3rd gens had a part 4WD system, i.e. it shouldn't be driven on dry pavement as it would cause driveline bind and excessive wear because it doesn't have a center differential.

The later 3rd gens had multi-mode 4WD system, which allows 4WD to be used full time, allowing it to be operated on any surface.
