Hello everyone for time on t4r just bought by first 4 runner last Wednesday! It's an 04 sr5 2wd and I'm really happy with it unfortunately I'm already having problems with it one that I'm sure of and the other problem I'm not sure where to start with thought I was getting a good deal from a local used car lot but I'm not so sure of it now. Now here are my problems 1st I popped a cell for a number 6 cyl misfire changed plugs like every one seems to do cleared the code with my obdll drove fine for 2 days then started it Friday when we where going to head out of town for denver and it idled rough for a bit then clear up so went ahead and the family and I took our trip had a good time and didn't have much problems but I notice it used a little coolent Google the problem and ford out about the dreaded number 6 cyl head gasket problem so I might just go ahead and change both head gaskets when I get to that point

Okay problem number 2! It has to do with the transmission "I think" so so I figures since this 4 runner has a 4 speed with od it would run lower rpm at highway speed I was turning about 3k + or - 100 rpm at 65mph is that normal??? Second part is that when I go to pass and I hit the kick down accelerator it jumps to 6 k rpm and just keeps going till red line unless I let of and pedal it a bit and get back in it then it will go down to about 5 k and that just don't seem right to me at all what could the problem be??? Ihave been trying to find something on t4r that has came close but to no avail I was thinking of the guy I bought iflt from put in a regular type of at instead of the type lv at that toyota recommends could that cause and issue?? Is my tranny slipping idk where to begin on this one is there a way to change the shift points or adjust the line pressure? I'm a pretty mechanical guy and know my way around cars but the is is my first foreign truck and just all seems well foreign to me or if I'm thin li ng in the right direction?? I would really appreciate and insight on my problem that any of you gents might have

Ps sorry for the long post and my bad grammer!
Adam

Bold 1: Almost certainly a blown HG, exhibiting telltale symptoms
Bold 2: Seems a little high to me actually, i turn almost exactly 2k at 70mph with 265/70/17s
Bold 3:What do you mean you "hit the kick down" if youre flooring it, yes it will go to the redline, the v6 has a power curve that is high in the RPM range, it likes it up top

I doubt your tranny is slipping, and a different fluid is unlikely to cause that anyway

I agree with the above poster's analysis. Very little doubt that there is something seriously wrong. Take it back to the dealer right now and get your money back.

Thanks for your reply! Yeah that's what I figured on the head gasket I'll have to get the gasket set bought and change it when I get the chance. Well I guess I'm just used to the old style v6's that where underpowered I climbed in this thing and wow! It suprised me! yeah I figured it would be lower rpm too I have 265 ' s as well did 4 runners have different gear ratios? I really don't know what else it could be

Definitely sounds like a head gasket. I would take that back ASAP. It's not a change it when i get a chance type of thing. I wouldn't even think of doing it on a car i just purchased. Depending on where you take it and what level of replacement/redoing you're looking at a $1,500-$4,000 job. Some even opt to just drop in a lower mileage engine.

If you want to do it yourself here's a good read: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/174451-new-member-need-help-p304-misfire.html

4runners had two different gear ratios, my 04 v6 has 3.91's I'm not sure what other models had those, but the vast majority have 3.73's

Thanks for the info! Well unfortunately taking it back isn't really and option being that I'm already Past the mileage that was on the paper work so that's a no go and I'm able to do it myself just didn't wanna have the problems right off the bat

Do 04's have a overdrive button? I know drive should be od but some cars still have an od button I was wondering if that may be my problem on rpm on the highway either that or I'm just not shifting into od idk it's all possible I would guess

Okay I'll check into that but I still wouldn't think it would make that big of an diffrence if I was in overdrive

Have you counted your shifts during acceleration to make sure you're actually getting into 4th gear?

There is no overdrive button. Drive allows all four gears to be used and flipping the shifter sideways into 3rd is the equivalent of a downshift button.

Yes I actually did that tonight just to make sure that it was I replaced the coolent temp sensor I read some where that that could cause problems but didn't change anything still 3000 rpm at 65 mph
