You can usually swing by an auto-parts store like Autozone, O'Reilly's, or just a general mechanic and they will read your codes for you. What do you drive? If your truck is recently new it is more than likely emission related. Have you tried tightening your gas cap, turning off the engine and the re-cranking? There really is no need to buy a code-reader unless you just want one.
