New High Pitched whining

Last 3 days (colder here) have a whining. Follows acceleration in volume. No check engine light. Thoughts are

alternator

belts

power steering

any others?

Could be any of those plus the A/C compressor and idlers. Pull the belt and see if it's quiet with it off, obviously don't run it for long. While the belt is off, spin all those items and see if any are loose, not smooth or make noise.

I'm thinking serpentine belt and check all of it.

Get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope from any good auto parts store to pinpoint the whining, they're cheap ($10+/-) no toolbox should be without one, or shadetree one by using a stick, long screwdriver or a piece of hose, one end cupped against your ear and the other end touching various spots until you locate the whine.

I have a cigarette lighter USB plugin with a voltage display, It's been reading low (12.3-13v) for a long time. Suddenly, a high pitch (metallicky) sound was coming from under the hood. Sure enough, the battery died a day later. Jumped it, ran it for several miles, came back the next day, dead. No doubt, at least for me, it was the alternator. Do what others suggest, however, have a voltmeter to see if the alternator is acting funny. Good luck

Thanks. It’s the alternator voltage low whining like a democrat. Replacing serpentine belt same time $1200 dealer
