New Horns? What Do You Like?

I grabbed some Chevy truck horns from the yard. Plug and play with a much better sound. $1 ,2 10mm bolts and five minutes later New horns, be sure they point down or water gets into them and they don't work. I think they're Fiaa brand. Consider an exo skeleton armor for that Cali traffic

Thanks for responding. I’m trying to make sense of “I stripped both factory wires and combined them into a single connector for the horn with two wires.” Both factory wires on the driver side already go into a single connector. I’m not sure what you mean about two wires. Did you run anything over to the passenger side, other than a ground? Thanks!

When I tried I grounded each horn individually and plugged the factory harness into each horn and no dice.

Same here in NM. People love to pull out their phones and start playing with them as soon as they get caught at a red, then they are in La La land when the light goes green and they just sit there, so you have to wake them up.

I've made a few people drop their phones with the caddy horns. It's funny.

The other common issues are pedestrians trying to step out against a crossing signal and lane drifters.

They can be found on pretty much any big body GM car from the early 80's to the mid 90's. Cadillac Eldorados & Devilles, Buick Park Avenues, big Oldsmobiles, etc. I looked for horns from the later model vehicles because they have water resistant harnesses and a 2 wire setup where they ground through the wiring rather than the mounting bracket. It makes for a much easier install because you don't have remove paint to ground each bracket.

I seem to recall the stock horns being single wire as they are grounded through the mount.

Funny thing I just remembered... I had purchased a forklift horn for a project years ago. I found it some time back and rigged it up to the doorbell that blared downward to the unsuspecting trespasser (we have and still have signs in the yard and at the front door). With cameras around the house that work on motion, including at the front door, I had some dang funny videos! Wish I would have saved those. When I sold that house I included the surveillance system and forgot to save those...
 
I bought a train horn off amazon that doesn't require a compressor. It just has a super high speed air pump. The first one I got (installed it on my boat) is insanely loud and I love it. It was only like 35 bucks.

I bought another one (exact same one) and installed it on my 4R. It's like half as loud. Sent it back only to receive another one that wasn't as loud as my first one.

It's still on there and is "loud" but not nearly as loud as the first one I got.

Stock horns do just have a single wire and ground through the mount. One of my stock horns wasn't working because of rust/corrosion where it mounted.
 
I’m an idiot! I didn’t have them grounded properly when I first tried. I just spent 10 minutes hooking them up and voila they work with a proper ground. Hooked up to just the factory wiring they are pretty damn loud, much louder than stock. Worthwhile little mod for where I live, I use my horn at least a couple times a week.

Don't be that hard on yourself. Nice to get it figured-out!

Consider measuring how loud it is, like the way I did in the link provided earlier (sound meter app). It's pretty fascinating, and of course provides an objective way to measure...
 
Being that I owned 7 Caddy's before the T4R I'll be doing the Cadillac horns whenever I get to that mod.

Any one from the 60's or 70's will be loud.
 
I have 2000 Landcruiser stock horn (should be the same as lexus LS 400 horn). This thing is LOUD and I used it today to remind the 2nd car (a volvo) in front of me to proceed on the left green arrow! The funny thing is the car directly in front of me got the road rage from the volvo!
 
Like BigFishAllDay, 4 tones of mid-80's boneyard Caddy horns w/relay but also left one cute little meeper in-

Only because the hubby said it was nutty to stick one of the yota horns in with the others. Don't use them often, but when I really need them they get the job done.

Cheap (@ $11.50 from Rock Auto), and totally plug and play, took me all of 5 minutes. Such a drastic improvement over the weak stock horns.

I just ordered a set, almost had to test the effectiveness of my ARB bumper today since some a-hole did not understand the concept of a lane on the road.
I honked at him and got lucky but realised that at higher speed you could not hear it.

I'll get them delivered on the 27th, will install them right away and will report back here.

It seems no GB, yet. There is supposed to be one this winter though, Dec apparently. I'm very interested.

While I have the factory bumper now (option 1 being desirable), I will go aftermkt at some point, so I imagine option 2 or 3 might be the way to go...

My 02 uses two different toned horns to make the sound that it does from the factory. One of them died so now mine is super weak sounding. My dad has an 80s Mercedes S class for parts (mainly the OM617 diesel) and that thing has a great horn, so I plan on wiring that in soon
