okay, after much wait the 4runner is done, sort of. Now that they have the diff in they told me that after a road test the 4x4 front won't engage. I noticed when I bought it that when I put it in 4x4 the light did not come on. I did not try it on the road as I had no insurance at the time. So what might be the NEW problem? why would it not engage? THe guy said it probably isn't major! this after I already spent $1200 parts and labour on it already. Any ideas? THanks Mark

What year?

On the early models, the 4WD is all mechanical, and the light working or not working has nothing do with it engaging, and is probably just a burned out light.

The problem could be anything from a bad transfer case to a bad locking hub... The hub is more likely.

Hi Guys, sorry about that...My 4Runner or $runner is a 1990 5 SPD, V6, with auto locking hubs. The guy said the transfer case is okay. He figured it was something up front but did not have time to investigate.

When I got my '87 with auto locking hubs (as I believe that yours are) they wouldn't engage either. The light did come on though. The hubs themselves were broken inside. I just replaced them with a used set of manual hubs which is preferable anyway. Have someone look at the shafts going to the front wheels as you are driving slowely, they shouldn't be moving. Put it in 4wd and they should be turning. if they are turning in 4wd the problem is in the hubs. I hope this is some help.

I just noticed that you are in Ontario, close to Guelph?
If so, your truck can't be fixed. I will give you $200 for it, That's CASH MONEY!!!
Or maybe I can help. :driving:

hey Zombie, very small world! I live near downtown Guelph! I would sell it but not for $200! I have a lot into it now. I also need to get my rad repaired. Thanks for your info I will have to check into that. Pioneer Transmission in Kitchener did my differential work and they told me to bring it back to look at the front end free of charge.

I was kidding about the $200, I live in the South end, just off Arkell rd. Pm me and we should meet up sometime. I have friend in Guelph who knows a lot about the Toyotas.
