New key and transmitter..cost?

I was quoted $150 for the key and transmitter and an addtional $30 to program. I heard that these keys were pricey..but $30 to program?! I told him it must be strenuous to program this key..he wasn't too happy..so $180 for a new set with a transmitter..good deal or not? :redbrick:

What year? I own a 4th gen (2003-2009) and I when I bought it this past August, it only came with 1 set. I was quoted a similar outrageous price. Mine has an engine immobilizer, so I need the chipped key (more expense) or I go no where. I found an uncut chipped key on ebay for 12 bucks and a key FOB transmitter for 30 bucks. Got the local hardware store to cut the key for 1.75 and was able to program both the key chip and the key fob by myself.

Total of like 45 bucks.. hella cheaper than 180!

Mine is a 2005 SR V6, Hmm..thinking now does the transmitter need to be programmed? I'm reading that the 2005 SR DOES NOT have an engine immobilizer..but does the dealer need to program the door/window transmitter fob?

Now. DO you have an engine immobilizer? Look at your key you have, does it have a small metal indent, looks like a small inward dot, right at the base where the metal meets the plastic of the key? If not, you do not have an immobilizer. If you do, your key is chipped and you do.

One note. The knock off key you get on Ebay, will probably not have the dot. Threw me a loop. Only Toyota does that.

Yep..I just saw mine right now..and it does have that dimple/dot also:

oh boy..geez..and I'm reading that some of these Ebay knock-off transponder keys might not work also..which only adds to the final cost..eh..perhaps I'll just bite the $180 for everything..

..and isn't programming the key itself (in regards to the engine immobilzation) a different animal in itself? I saw the DIY in programming the fob remote to unlock/lock your door, but the chipped key..how do you program that? I thought the dealer or some locksmith were the only ones..they use some special device.. OR do the DIY programming also program the chip key TOGETHER?

Does programming the fob remote ALSO program the chip? Does it take care of both?

Trust me. I just did this 1 month ago. It is the easiest thing in the world to do on your own.

Where did you read the ebay keys don't work? I had no issue and neither have others.

The chips use RFID tech and they are passively scanned and are stupid simple and reliable.

Take a look at this.. When we were talking about this about a month ago, apparently it was not well known that you can pair a new key with the truck on your own.

The instructions are there and very easy. Took me about 2 minutes to pair my new chipped key with my truck.

If you want to blow 180.00, go for it. Sure Toyota would love the money. You don't need to.

NO. Separate activities. Your key FOB - ONLY unlocks the doors and disables any door alarm (if you have it). The physical KEY that you put in the ignition is what turns the engine immobilizer off. Each one is programmed with individual processes.

I agree.

I already had 2 masters and 1 valet, but I wanted to see if I could do it myself. So I bought a key off of ebay for $10 and using the programming that DC Runner linked to. No problems and it worked like it supposed to. Works great. Save yourself a ton of money and program the keys yourself. What do you have to lose except $10-12 on ebay vs $150+ with Toyota?

The aftermarket keys are probably the same ones Toyota is using, except Toyota has their chipped keys marked. Use a punch and and mark it yourself - lol!
