New Look of 4Runner

I was in a parking lot and noticed the new look of the 4runner, much different than my 96. almost doesn't look like a 4runner, none of that indented side mold look so what do you think of them or do you like the older 4runner. It looks like they have changed the look a few times starting in 96 and then in 2000 then again 2005.

I like the look of the 96 more than new ones but never got the addition of the hood scoop, just doesn't fit a truck look to me.

our 3rd gens (96-02) changed slightly as far as looks goes twice with 3 different types of grills.

then came the 4th gens (03-09)

then 5th gens (10-present)

The 3rd gens are far and away my favorite of them all. Well, outside the 1st gens. I'd love to have a cherry 1st gen. After '02, they got way too soccer mommy-ish with way too much plastic crap used.

ehh, the 4th gen grew on me a little bit and the 5th gens look better over the 4th gens but they are just so damn big.

Not surprising that the more plastic body parts that come off in favor off road goodies, the better looking the newer trucks get. Steel > Urethane.

I'm a fan of the older model trucks dimensions in general. Past that, I prefer the design as well. I also like the older interiors, more utilitarian.

Trucks/SUV's have adopted too many commuter car designs and themes in general for my liking.

That said, the 4runner line is still in way better shape than most manufacturer's competition has faired over the years.

I've gotta say that I have owned every Gen but the 5th and currently have 1st, 3rd, and 4th. Each has its own uniqueness and I wouldn't trade any of my current rigs but if my 4th gen had a 5 speed and a solid axle it could be nearly the perfect Runner. and yes I've drooled over the Rocksolidtoys in fact I'm a member there.:trophy: That day may come but for now I enjoy each of my runners in a different way. BTW on paper it may look like the 4.0 owns the 4.7 but drive them each and you won't say that

Its funny how subtle differences in styling cues can create such divisions among brand loyalists. I totally agree that the 2nd and 4th are poohie. However, the 3rd gen wasn't such radical redesign over the 2nd. And the more I drive my 5th, the less I despise the 4th gens. Strange?! That being said, the 3rd gen was the best overall design IMO.

the 4th gen has grown on me over time, and i'd dig a V8. I can't decide how i feel about the 5th gens, they remind me alot of the Nissan SUV's with the boxiness, very Armada-like in shape.

just to set things straight, I LOVE my 4th gen and it's v8, but my love for 4runners started with a 3rd gen.

What made and makes the 4Runner (especially the 3rd gens) so great is that they are a very usable size and weight. If I needed/wanted something to tow with, I'd buy something with a V8. Other than that, the only other engine I would want is the turbo diesel 3.0l. I mean, their greatest engine was the little 4-banger 22RE.

I'm really not trying to hate on any of the other Runners. It's just my opinion. I had a 2nd gen and loved it minus the POS engine.

I have personally owned a 1st, 2nd and 3rd gen and I like them all. My parents own a 4th gen, so I have driven all 4 quite a bit. My favorites are the 1st and 3rd by far. The 2nd is cool, but nothing special especially with the 3.0.

I like the ride of the 4th gens and the extra power. My parents have the V6 and it is so much more powerful than the 3.4. The body is a bit different, but look good once you modify them a little. I really like the 5th gens. I haven't driven one yet, but based on looks I really like them.

A good friend of mine has a '10 Trail Edition and it is a GREAT Runner. Super nice inside and out. The size just prevented me from buying one.

The 3rd generations look the best but only when comparing lifted to lifted. I don't like how much bigger the new trucks are. This is a general trend that Toyota undertook so they could gain marketshare in the US but I don't like it.

I think the new 4Runners are too big and I think that the new Tundras are TERRIBLE compared to the earlier years. When I see a 2010 Tundra I often have to look twice and verify it isn't Dodge. Minus 1000 for style Toyota. I do think the new F150/250 look really good, better than the new Tundras anyways.

=> I would like to the have Toyotas inline 6, the one used in the FJs. I hear it is a great engine.

On the trail you have no need for a V8. A V6 in 4LO is all you need. Any 3rd gen in 4LO w/ a locker, its higher clearance, better approach angle, and better flex will run circles around that giant 5th gen on the trails.

fj cruisers have inline 6's? I was under the impression they had the same 4.0 as the 4runners..
EDIT: fj cruisers do share the same 4.0 L V6's as the 4runners.

I know what you mean about the 4runners getting bigger, but that is what they have to do to compete. They have the Highlander for anyone who wants smaller and the Tacoma instead of the Tundra.

I think the 4runners are a good size especially since people want more room these days, but in a more compact size. The Sequoia is HUGE, so that really isn't an option for most people. The Tundras are just massive, but thats what they had to do to compete with Chevy, Ford and Dodge.
