New member, 1999 SR5 w/ 88K miles

Hello All,

New to the forums....have been reading for a few months now.

Picked up a new to me 1999 Desert Dune Sr5 V6 4WD 4Runner w/ 88K miles about 1.5 months ago.

Have put in a ton of work to get it to where I wanted it, and now it needs the little maintenance items to get it squared away.

Since purchase I've added/done:

31x10.5x15 BFG All-Terrain TA KOs
New OEM style muffler
New primary/Secondary cats
New tailpipe
New primary O2 sensor (Denso)
New liftgate shocks
New OEM front bumper and valences
New OEM rear bumper
New OEM rear side bumper pieces
Oil change
Alignment
Wipers
Drain/Refill Transmission with Valvoline Dex VI synthetic ATF

On the short order of things to fix/address:
Broken front swaybar endlinks
Replace/repair parking brake bell-cranks
transfer case/differential flush
MAF cleaning/airfilter/fuel filter
New plugs/wires
New radiator
Taco whip mod
Timing belt/water pump (will likely postpone to 100K since I've tapped out my funds getting this thing in shape)

I will post pictures later this evening, but had a quick question for starters...what tire pressure should I inflate my AT TA's to? This is primarily a a DD driven on road, mixed driving, primarily city.

Where did you purchase your:
New liftgate shocks (Do they lift well?)
New OEM front bumper and valences
New OEM rear bumper

I'm surprised you need to replace so many things with only 88K on the clock. Good for you for doing it in advance.

I think actual age is just a big of factor as milage in most cases.

Exactly. For example, rubber parts are going to age on time, not miles. In this case from what he had to replace, I'd guess it sat outside for a while in an area known for rust.

True, and I think your comment also brings to mind that geography plays a role in wear & tear as well. I take for granted the condition on my 200K (California raised from new to 2010) truck in AZ, compared to a 100K east coast rig where rust is prevalent.

I've been doing preventative maintainence on mine over the last several months. You know what's funny, everything I've replaced was not broken and/or had little wear. Based on my experience, your comments make me feel very lucky.

You guys are right. I live in MA. Snow =Salt=Rust.

The original bumpers were so rusted that you could put your fist through the holes. The previous owner had put silver duct tape over them as a fix...

I tried salvaging the valences on the front bumper (in good shape) but the bolts holding them together were so rusted I had to throw them out.

Not cheap to replace with OEM stuff

As for where I got the OEM parts, I used toyotaoempartsworld.com. Good prices but service is so so to poor.


I bought the truck knowing it needed a new muffler and O2 sensor, but the tailpipe flange was toast, and the cats were also leaking from rust near the hangers. Now I am finally running without a CEL, and the truck passed inspection, but took a lot of $$$.

Hoping it holds up well for me from here on out. Now if I could do something about the 15mpg

Your to do list should take care of that. Add air filter and check your tire pressure, too.

Here's to hoping it does. I wouldn't get rid of it for the gas mileage, but compared to my other car...which isn't efficient by any means, I can literally watch the gas gauge move down when I press the gas pedal.
